Email Marketing Campaigns

Topic summary

A new Shopify user asks about customizing email marketing campaigns using the Taste theme and tracking performance metrics.

Design Questions:

  • Image sizing: Shopify Email lacks precise resizing tools. Recommended approach is pre-sizing images (600px width) in external tools like Canva before uploading.
  • Text placement: Use “Image with Text” blocks and select vertical/stacked layout to position text below images instead of beside them.
  • Background colors: Available through section settings in the right-hand panel, allowing custom HEX codes or preset colors.

Analytics Access:
Navigate to Shopify Admin → Marketing → Campaigns → select specific campaign to view:

  • Open rate (% who opened)
  • Click rate (% who clicked links)
  • Unsubscribes
  • Bounces (undelivered emails)

Alternative Solutions Suggested:
Multiple respondents recommend third-party apps (Klaviyo, Mailchimp, Omnisend, and vendor-specific solutions) for more advanced features like drag-and-drop editors, automation flows, richer templates, and flexible pricing models. Some apps offer pay-per-email-sent pricing rather than contact-based pricing.

Hello! I am fairly new to Shopify and have some questions about the email marketing. Not sure if it matters what theme we are using or not but we are using the Taste theme.

When creating an email:

1 - Is there a way to alter the size of images either with or without text?

2 - Is there a way to move the text under the small square image rather than to either side?

3 - Is there a way to change the color of the section backgrounds?

After the email is sent and regarding the analytics:

How do I find out the:

  • open rate

  • engagement

  • bounce backs

  • unsubscribes

Thanks so much!

Hello @beckyvolk65

Hey there! Welcome to Shopify — and no worries, you’re asking great questions! While your Shopify theme (Taste) doesn’t affect email design, the email marketing platform you use does — so I’ll tailor the answer to Shopify Email, since that’s built-in and beginner-friendly. If you’re using Klaviyo or another platform, just let me know and I can adjust!

Email Design in Shopify Email

  1. Can You Alter Image Sizes?
    Sort of! In Shopify Email:

. You can’t resize images precisely with drag handles like in Canva or Mailchimp.

. But you can:

. Use the “Image with Text” or “Image” blocks.

. Try uploading images that are already resized (recommended: 600px wide for full-width).

. Set alignment and width scaling (some blocks have % width dropdowns).

Use Canva or Photoshop to resize/crop before uploading — Shopify Email doesn’t have cropping tools.

  1. Move Text Under Image Instead of Beside It?
Yes — use the “Image with Text” block, then:

. In the block settings, select “Text below image”.

. If the text appears next to it, click the block and change layout settings or try a different template block.

  1. Change Background Colors?
    Absolutely!

. Click into the section of the email (each block is usually in a section).

. On the right-hand side (design panel), you’ll see a “Background color” option.

. You can change it to any color code, use presets, or even add your brand’s HEX code (like #f5f5f5 or #fff).

Email Analytics in Shopify Email
After you send an email, here’s how to view your metrics:

How to Access:
Go to:
Shopify Admin → Marketing → Campaigns → [Click Your Email Campaign]

You’ll see metrics like:

Metric | What It Shows
Open Rate | % of recipients who opened your email
Click Rate | % of opens that clicked a link
Unsubscribes | Count of people who unsubscribed
Bounces | Emails that weren’t delivered (wrong email, blocked, etc.)

Note: Shopify Email tracks unique opens and clicks, so numbers may be a little lower than other platforms like Klaviyo which can inflate totals via multiple opens.

Want More Flexibility?
If you ever feel limited by Shopify Email, you might consider:

. Klaviyo (great for automation & advanced design)

. Mailchimp (for easy drag-and-drop with strong visuals)

. Omnisend (Shopify-friendly and has SMS + email in one)

Thank you

Hi @beckyvolk65 ,
Welcome to Shopify, and great choice with the Taste theme, it has a clean layout that works well for product-focused emails. Happy to help walk you through both email design and performance tracking.

To Answer Your Email Design Questions:

  1. Can you change image size?
  • Shopify Email has limited flexibility with image resizing. You can upload different image dimensions, but there’s no built-in tool to drag-resize like in graphic editors.
  • For more control, try designing your images in a tool like Canva first, then upload them at the exact size you want.
  1. Move text under an image instead of beside it?
  • Yes, you can stack image and text vertically by using the “Image with text” block.
  • Just make sure the layout style is set to vertical rather than side-by-side. This is ideal for mobile-friendly formatting.
  1. Change background colors in sections?
  • Yes. When you select a section, look in the right-hand panel for background settings. You can set custom colors for each block or section individually.
  • If your theme’s colors carry into the email builder, be sure to override them where needed to stay on-brand.

Email Analytics After Sending:

To view performance of your emails in Shopify Email:

  • Go to Marketing > Campaigns
  • Click on the email campaign you sent
  • You will see metrics

If you’re using a third-party email app, you can find these stats inside the app’s dashboard under “Reports” or “Analytics.”
