Email subscription/double opt in/discount flaw?!

I’m currently offering a 10% discount to new email subscribers, via the Shopify email capture pop-up form. Obviously this is a standard incentive to build a customer list. However, I think there may be a flaw with the ‘double opt in’ process. As soon as a customer enters their email address the discount code is revealed. This is fine but because of the double opt in process it means customers get the discount BEFORE they actually confirm they want to subscribe. Does that make sense? Kind of defeats the whole purpose, no? I’ve gained 58 customers this week but only 22 have fully subscribed. They all got the discount…
