Enable third party cookies on Shopify for the best experience

Topic summary

Users encounter a persistent error message in Safari when accessing Shopify’s theme editor, preventing them from customizing their stores despite following Shopify’s initial cookie settings recommendations.

Initial troubleshooting attempts (unsuccessful):

  • Enabling content blockers in Safari settings
  • Unchecking “Block all cookies”
  • Clearing Safari cache
  • Deleting and re-ticking settings

Working solution:
Unchecking “Prevent cross-site tracking” in Safari’s Privacy settings resolves the issue immediately. Multiple users confirmed this fix works.

Important security consideration:
Disabling cross-site tracking reduces personal data protection by allowing trackers across websites. Users are advised to:

  • Re-enable the setting after finishing Shopify work
  • Keep only Shopify tabs open when the setting is disabled
  • Consider using Chrome or Firefox as alternatives

Shopify’s response:
Customer service reportedly has “no experience” with Safari and redirects users to community forums. The company suggests switching to Chrome rather than fixing the underlying compatibility issue.

Status: The workaround functions but requires compromising privacy settings. No official fix from Shopify despite Safari representing 17% of global browser usage.

Hi,

Whilst you are on shopify admin page, click on safari and in the drop down you should see >settings for your store , click on that:

in settings put a tick on “enable content blockers”

Should work now hopefully.

Thanks, Javsi. Unfortunately, it was already ticked and still happening. Any other ideas?

That worked for straight away, just try and delete the cache then quit safari and reopen, then try again. Also make sure in safari>settings>privacy there is no tick on block all cookies.

Hi, Javsi. I have the same issue. Everything was still working yesterday. I have done everything on this page, unfortunately, it was already ticked and still happening. Any other ideas? :folded_hands: Thank you.

It is really odd, maybe try untick go to customisation, come of it and tick again. This message is only for that particular account and if you sign up for new one, it wont happen. Last resort is to use google chrome for now.

Having same issue, has anyone found a fix to this yet? Need a fix asap for a project.

Thanks for trying to help with this. I’ve followed all of the above steps and I am still experiencing this issue. Also, I contacted Shopify customer service and they simply stated that they had “no experience” with Safari and redirected me to this page to follow your instructions. At one point, they even instructed me to contact Safari regarding this issue. I am completely disappointed in Shopify’s handling of this matter. And based on their response, I am not sure if a fix is currently on their radar. Their only solution is to use Chrome.

I am having this issue as well. I have:

  • “Enabled Content Blockers”
  • unticked “Block all cookies”
  • cleared my safari cache

Was there a new Shopify update in the last week or so?

Same issue here, only on Safari and on the site editor itself. Have tried everything in this thread to no avail, just started happening to me today.

I have been having the same problem for a few days. Nothing works, every time I enter the theme editor I get the cookies message and it doesn’t allow to work.

Uncheck ‘Prevent cross-site tracking’. It should work after that.
