Multiple Shopify store owners are experiencing 404 errors when customers attempt to create accounts, log in, log out, or reset passwords. The issue appears to affect different stores with varying configurations and has caused customer frustration during sales periods.
Key Technical Findings:
One diagnosis identified incorrect redirection URLs in theme code
Another analysis revealed missing Google reCAPTCHA authentication code in the account creation flow
The problem doesnât affect all customers consistently (approximately 30% encounter it)
Confirmed Solutions:
Duplicate language settings: One user resolved the issue by removing a duplicate Romanian language entry in Settings > Languages > Published Languages
Legacy customer accounts: Switching from new customer accounts to âLegacyâ mode in Settings > Customer Accounts > Login links fixed the problem for another user
Temporary Workarounds:
Disabling the requirement for customers to log in at checkout (allowing guest checkout)
Completely disabling customer accounts until resolved
Shopify support recommends contacting authenticated support channels to verify Google reCAPTCHA settings and check for apps injecting theme changes. The issue may have emerged after Shopify 2.0 updates.

Hello!
On my website the customers keep getting error 404 when they try to create a new account / login or change the password - if they logout, they are unable to access the account. I tried and got the same error, on mobile (iphone and android0 and also on desktop.
I suspected that was occuring because of my Brooklyn theme and changed it to Craft and I still get error 404 for these actions.
Please help me solve this issue as it seems to cost me customers
Regards,
Teodora
The domain is automatically renewed in shopify. The domain is up and running, because you can access it at https://loveandstarsjewels.com/
The customers can buy if they donât logout or if they make the purchase without creating/connecting to the account. So something else must be causing the problem, not the website domain.
It is setup. The previous customers, which didnât logout from the account, can still make purchases without problems. I have the website since 2020 and it was setup with customer accounts from the start. This issue is recent (maybe after Shopify 2.0 ?) and it was brought to my attention by customers. They usually stay logged on the website but some of them changed phones. What I thought to be an unexperienced customer or maybe some bad settings on their part, I tested and it is real
I tested as a customer the following actions - creating a new account, logging in, logging out and reseting password. After each action I got error 404. It is a problem that lasts for several days and the problem persists.
I checked your website and tried to create an account on your website and it shows a 404 error because the redirection URL is incorrect. If you want to solve this issue you want to change the redirection URL of the account page in your theme edit code section.
Great, and how do I do that? I want to mention that in the edit code section I didnât make any changes in the customers sections. Can you help me please to solve this issue and guide me how to modify?
Thank you for reaching out about this. I was able to test the experience and was also able to replicate the 404 error. What I am seeing is that when submitting information for a customer account the account creation is not validating (confirming the user is real).
For example, on my own test store when I go to create a customer account and hit submit I am then provided a message that an email has been sent to verify my customer account.
When inspecting your page I can see that it doesnât have the code built in for this step of authentication, specifically there is no prompt for the google recaptcha authentication.
I would ask that you please reach out to our authenticated support channels to ensure that the backend of your account has Google Recaptcha enabled properly and that there is no app injecting changes into your theme file. In the interim, it may be best to disable customer accounts entirely until this is resolved. You can make that change in your store admin under Settings > Checkout and Accounts.

THIS HAS BEEN RESOLVED. We turned off the requirement that a customer must be logged in to checkout. So now they may checkout as a guest. Thanks.
Some of our customers are having the exact same problem. They are repeat customers and have had an account for a long time. Some were logged in as recently as this morning, but now they cannot log back in after logging out. We would rather not turn off customer accounts because it has helped cut down on fraud. To make matters worse we are in the middle of a 24 hour sale and these people would like to purchase but are getting terribly frustrated. Itâs not happening to everybody which makes it even more perplexing. If you can tell me what we need to do to fix this ASAP, we would very much appreciate it. Thanks.
Hi Shay, I am having the same problem for a client website. I am getting a 404 error as soon as I start entering the password in the login form. Disabling the customer accounts is not an option since we only sell to logged in customers.
I have enabled the re-captcha. This does not happen all the time, but 30% of the times a user tries to login.

Hello! In my case the problem was in Settings - Languages - Published Languages where the chosen language for the website Romanian appeared twice. After deleting one of them, no more error.
I mention that the duplicate appeared out of nowhere
