Exclusive AMA: Optimizing your Inventory Management with Shopify Experts!

I’m so tired of downloading allllllll the apps to get the site to do what I feel like are basic things hahaha! Then you have more glitches, and have to deal with various customer service teams outside of Shopify. I feel like on an e-commerce site this should be a basic feature. same with wholesale (which I have an app for).

Hi @KAMOFY ,

Eric here - the developer behind the app Synkro: Inventory sync (https://apps.shopify.com/synkro). We have worked hard to build a reliable and fast real-time inventory syncing solution which can be used to sync inventory between any number of Shopify stores. We offer a complementary white-gloves onboarding service to make sure everything is set up perfectly for your requirements.

To get started with inventory syncing, you can follow these step-by-step instructions: https://synkro-app.com/documentation/sync-inventory-between-stores

Once you’ve installed the Synkro app, you can optionally book a help session with us to go through the installation together. You can also feel free to email me at eric@techvomfass.com and I will be happy to answer all of your questions :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi, I have products I sell in bundles and individually. What app do I use to account for the products sold in bundles and sold individually? I need my inventory numbers to reflect the product movement in both places. Thank you

It is time for Shopify to REPLY and address the most active Community topic/request!!!

Hi @PMac ! In addition to @ericdude4 's great suggestion, you could also try out our in-Admin bulk editing capabilities. You can access the bulk editor from your Inventory or Product pages.

Hello! Fellow business owner here.

For in person sales paying via Venmo, to keep track of my inventory, I use the Shopify POS app and usually mark paid as “cash”. Hope this helps.

Agreed Steve! It is a huge waste of time through this process.

Hello and thanks for your question @sgjess ! Are you tracking your inventory across locations in Shopify, and are you using Shopify POS for checking out customers in your physical locations?

If quantities are not updating throughout the day based on your sales, it’s probably because you aren’t tracking inventory with Shopify, and you haven’t inputted inventory quantities for your products. Here’s a helpful resource that goes into managing inventory with Shopify.

When looking at Sales reports is there an option to see 0 sales or 0 inventory movement of a specific product?

Additionally, I just set up my flow notifications for inventory, however the notification tells me the entire products stock number rather than the specific variant it is alerting me about. Is there a way to adjust this?

I agree, this is a huge issue we face so we have become accustomed to either changing the cost altogether (which is not correct accounting wise) or estimating. This is not good accounting procedure.

Currently, my painpoint with inventory management is in regards to replenishment whereby I export my current inventory every week or two and import that into a spreadsheet in order to identify which products need replenishing with my supplier. This is a manual process which involves using some formulas, but also some manual work. I am wondering what are some best practises for automating inventory replenishment on an ongoing basis

100%! Also, some basic features you would think are included in POS PRO you have to pay for through 3rd party apps. Not cool. also, we wonder about the security of our data through all these outside apps having access as well.

I’m no expert but I run a busy business with Shopify. I use Stocky and Report > Sku/ Variant then add filter to run reports for sales data during specific time frames. I use this all the time when placing order. I was also just introduced in this session to Shopify Analytics > Report > Sell Through Rate by Product. I’m exploring this new to me report soon.

Hi,

We have a very small pet supplies boutique store. Once a month we order direct from the wholesaler on behalf of our clients who are willing to place a monthly order. This is a laborious process because we either have to stop all orders during the week that we are accepting monthly orders from VIP clients or we have to ‘oversell’ our current inventory and then decipher who wants to be included in the preorder and who wants product right now (often we are sold out of an item and have to call someone and tell them we won’t have it for a week to 10 days and they are frustrated because our website shows that it is available since we are overselling). Is there a way to make this so it doesn’t affect our current inventory? Should I set up a shadow store that we only open once a month for these wholesale preorders? What’s the best way to do this? Currently it’s super inefficient and frustrating for all those involved. Thanks!

Hi @Olaeda , thank you for your question.

The ability to track components or raw materials is something we are investigating, but not something we currently support natively. At this time, Shopify’s inventory management within the admin is primarily for tracking finished good items that can be sold through your online store, POS, or 3rd party sales channels.

For now, I recommend checking out the Shopify app store for an app that is designed to track inventory for manufacturing. There are a number of apps for merchants of all sizes to help track and manage the manufacturing process, such as sub-component inventory. I can’t recommend a specific app, but some useful keywords include: “MRP”, “Manufacturing ERP”, “Raw materials inventory”.

Hope this helps!

Hello @LouisAnthonyEnt ! If you are referring to their online store navigation, when organizing it you don’t need to create separate versions for mobile and desktop. Shopify themes are designed to be responsive, meaning they automatically adjust to different screen sizes and devices. Here’s a few tips:

Responsive design: Make sure you are using a responsive Shopify theme. These themes are built to adapt to various screen sizes, ensuring a seamless experience for users on both mobile and desktop devices.

Simplified navigation: Keep your navigation simple and intuitive. Avoid having too many menu items, as this can clutter the navigation and make it difficult for users to find what they’re looking for. Use clear, concise labels for your menu items.

This doesn’t seem like its related to their inventory though. If you’re still experiencing issues we recommend you contact Shopify Support.

Hi @jennibrand ,

Eric here from the Synkro: Inventory sync app. I wonder if you would be able to create separate products which are only available to your VIP customers? Then you could track inventory separately for these pre-order products which are only available to your VIP customers.

Hi @ExoticSodaco ! If you never want to fulfill online orders from your physical store, then this is absolutely possible. You need to have two different locations to set this up: let’s call them warehouse and retail store.

  • In your location settings, make sure that your retail store location has “fulfill online orders from this location” unchecked.
  • In your shipping and delivery settings > shipping profiles, double check that this retail store location has no shipping rates active.
  • In your shipping and delivery settings, if you see a feature called “Fulfillable Inventory”, make sure it’s set to “sell only within configured shipping zones”. If you don’t see this feature, don’t worry! You’ve already been opted in correctly.

By doing this, you’re setting your online store up so that it only takes into account inventory from your warehouse, not your physical location. When the warehouse inventory hits 0, the product will be removed from your online store.

Hope that helps!

What is the best way to keep track of inventory when half is sold online and the other half is sold in person?

Im checking it out!
