Experiencing issues with gift card codes: Is this a scam?

I have a weird situation. I have a customer that was given a gift card from a family member. When I search for the card number the last four letters do not appear to be active. When I find the family members transaction the last four letters are different then what was printed out. Has this ever happened to anyone else before? Is this gift card real? Or am I getting scammed? Help!

Though this situation does sound a little suspect at first, let’s assume positive intent, and see if there are some other issues that may be going on. I have a few questions I’d love for you to take a peek at and get back to me on:

  • Was this a giftcard issues via the native functionality Shopify offers, or was it issued through a third-party giftcard application integrated with your store?
  • Was this a physical gift card, or one that was purchased digitally online?
  • Are you able to find any transaction that match the 4 last digits of the card the customers provided you? Instead of looking for just the information on the family member that purchased the card, perhaps we can find some information regarding those digits on another transaction?
  • What was the supposed value of the giftcard?
