Facebook setup problem - Each asset is already associated with a different shop

Topic summary

A merchant encountered an error when connecting Facebook and Instagram to their new Shopify store after migrating from PrestaShop. The error stated that business assets were “already associated with a different shop,” despite removing all PrestaShop connections.

Root Cause Identified:
The issue stems from Instagram being linked to the Facebook Business Page within Facebook settings, which the system interprets as being attached to another asset.

Solution That Worked:

  • Navigate to Facebook Business Page → “Manage Page” → Settings → “Linked Accounts”
  • Disconnect Instagram from Facebook
  • Instagram should only be connected to Facebook through the Instagram app itself, not through Facebook Business settings
  • The order of connections matters

Additional Fix:
One user reported that enabling Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) resolved their issue.

Community Response:
Multiple users confirmed this solution worked after struggling for months or over a year. Several expressed frustration that neither Shopify nor Meta support teams identified this linkage issue or provided debugging tools to diagnose it.

Hi All

I have recently moved my shop over from PrestaShop to Shopify.

When trying to setup the Facebook & Instagram Sales channel I am running into a problem.

I can connect to Facebook fine, but when it comes to selecting Business Assets I get the following error message for Facebook and Instagram:

Each asset is already associated with a different shop. Please disable one to proceed.

I have disconnected Facebook from my PrestaShop account; I have removed Prestashop App link in Facebook; and I removed PrestaShop as a Partner in Facebook Business Manager. However it still does not work.

Any help will be appreciated!

This means one of your business assets (for example, Pages, ad accounts and Instagram accounts) within Meta Business Manager is connected to a different shop either on Prestashop or Shopify.

You might want to try and analysis your Facebook/Instagram sales channel on Shopify from scratch again.

Hi. Yes it was attached/ assigned(?) to our PrestaShop site but we have removed that.

I have tried adding the Facebook/Instagram sales channel in Shopify several times to no success.

Even yesterday with help from Meta support we deleted heaps of things in Facebook; and supposedly removed all assets related to the store in Commerce Manager…but still no luck!

Anyone else have any ideas!

After a year of trying to figure this problem out. I have finally got my shop to work. Its not necessarily a flaw in the system, but more redundant communication between platforms. I found out that my Instagram account was connected to my Facebook page and the system read it as being attached to another asset. Its very odd, but I went to my Facebook Business page under “Manage Page”. I then went to settings to “Linked Accounts” and disconnected Instagram from Facebook. It’s not necessary to connect Instagram with you Business account in Facebook. It’s only necessary to connect Instagram to Facebook in the Instagram App. So really it comes down to the order of Connection. At least this fixed my issue with the same Error Code.

This fixed my problem, after spending the entire day talking with Shopify and Meta support to no avail. Thank you so much for coming back to update the thread !

Thank you sooooo much this solved my issue and I am sooo greatful. I think my Facebook disconnect the second I added instgram to it and never even noticed. Now I am fullt synced and can run ads again. :raising_hands: you are the best

I knwo this thread is old but i tried everything listed in here turns out it was because my 2FA was not turned on. So make sure thats on 2 Factor Authentication. Hope this helps guys and hope the best for your business!

How is it that their support teams don’t know about account linkage errors such as this and don’t have debugging tools to just know what the issue is? I also have been trying to connect for over a year and it has never worked.
