Favicon showing only in tab but not in search results

Topic summary

A user reports their favicon displays correctly in browser tabs but not in Google search results, despite following guidelines. They encountered errors when requesting indexing and are concerned about competitive disadvantage.

Initial troubleshooting:

  • The favicon was originally sized at dimensions other than standard recommendations
  • User was advised to resize to 32x32px or 16x16px (standard sizes)
  • Site launched approximately one month ago

Resolution & consensus:
Multiple respondents confirmed that Google requires several weeks to crawl and index favicon changes, even when the icon displays correctly in browsers. The delay is normal and expected.

Current status:
User resized favicon to 32x32px as recommended. The issue remains unresolved but is attributed to Google’s indexing timeline rather than a technical problem. Participants advise patience while waiting for Google to update search results.

Since I launched my site the favicon is showing only in tab but not in search results, even though I am doing everything by the guidelines. I even tried to request indexing on my website but some error showed up. How can I fix this? Without favicon in google search I cannot really compete with other sites.

Hi @Pajchel

Could you please check your favicon size? It is recommendable in size as per standard.

Also, could you please check its favicon format?

This is the favicon size and format:

I custom coded many html and css things on my site.

Make it 32 x 32 px or 16 x 16 px.

When did you launch your site?

Now I changed it to 32x32 but its still not showing in google search. I launched it roughly a month ago.

@Pajchel

I just wanted to share that it can take Google a few weeks to display your favicon in search results, even if it’s showing correctly in the browser’s URL bar. This delay happens because Google needs time to crawl and update its index with the changes. If it’s not showing up yet, just be patient, and it should eventually appear.

Hope this helps!

Hi @Pajchel

Just a quick reminder: even though your favicon may be appearing correctly in the browser’s URL bar, it can take Google a few weeks to update its search results with the change. This delay is due to the time required for Google to crawl your site and refresh its index.

If the favicon hasn’t shown up yet, don’t worry—just give it some time, and it should appear eventually.

Hope this clarifies things for you!

I hope this helps

Hi @Pajchel

It will take a few days for Google to index and update your site’s favicon on search results!
