Feature Request: Collection Tags (or Filter by Template) for Easier Management in Shopify Admin

I run mikesgameshop.com and I have collections for gaming platforms (like Playstation 2, Xbox 360, etc) movie genres (like Romantic, Drama, etc), interests (like Sports, Racing, etc), franchises (like Pokémon, Mario, etc), formats (like Blu-ray, DVD, etc), and more. The purpose of these collections is to give as many cross-sections of my product catalog as possible in ways that help customers find what they’re looking for. Nothing I’m attempting to do is particularly unusual… which is why it surprises me that the Shopify Admin does not have a way to filter collections! I am limited to filtering by text search, channel availability, and on the basis of whether the collection is populated with products on an automatic or manual basis. None of these filtering conditions help me get a list of genre collections, for example.

There are two ways this could be resolved:

  1. Implement tags as a property of collections and allow store managers to filter on that basis

  2. Implement filtering collections by its collection template

Implementing such would make it possible for store managers to pull up collections on the basis of some common thread between collections, which would be fantastically useful when using the bulk editor to confirm consistency/accuracy in SEO Titles (or similar purpose) for all collections sharing a common thread.

Hello Mike,

While recent release of Shopify Filter is excellent, it still has the limitation you mentioned. If you still need to filter products by collections, you can use a filter app that has some advanced features including that one. Please check https://apps.shopify.com/ultimate-search-and-filter-1. You can add filters by collections easily. By default the app creates the “Default filter group”, you can use that one or create your own groups.

I think you might have misunderstood. The app you linked to is aimed at customers. My feature requests pertain to the tools a store manager has at their disposal when doing collection management within the Shopify Admin.

Update: I recently noticed that Metafields are now available for collections. I thought this might solve my issue. So I tried. In Admin, I created a metafield for “Collection Type” and entered values like “Genre” for applicable collections. Then, I searched “Genre” on the “Collections” page in Admin. Unfortunately, the search does not penetrate metafield values and the search did not return the collections I hoped it would.

Collection metafields could be perfect for easier collection management if the values could be searchable in Admin.
