It would be extremely helpful to have the ability to set an expiration date on customer tax exemption records in the Shopify admin.
Currently, when a customer is marked as tax-exempt, that exemption remains active indefinitely and must be manually tracked and removed. For businesses that deal with tax-exempt customers (such as resellers, nonprofits, or government entities), exemption certificates often have expiration dates set by state or provincial tax authorities. Without a built-in expiration feature, merchants are responsible for manually tracking these dates outside of Shopify, which creates risk of non-compliance if an expired certificate is missed.
Requested functionality:
-
Ability to add an expiration date to a customer’s tax exemption setting
-
Automated notification when an exemption is approaching its expiration date
-
Automatic removal or flagging of the exemption once the date has passed
This would help merchants stay compliant with tax regulations and reduce the administrative burden of manually managing exemption certificates across a large customer base.
