Feature request: Improved VAT support for Shopify in Norway and the Nordic market

Hi Shopify team,

We have previously been in dialogue with Shopify regarding this issue, and we would like to submit it as an important feature request for the Norwegian and Nordic market.

Uno Vita AS is growing, and we are increasing our sales both locally in Norway and internationally. We sell both B2C and B2B. We want to take full advantage of Shopify’s advanced features and are also evaluating whether to move to Shopify Plus. However, this only makes sense for us if we can actually benefit from Shopify’s full feature set, including Shopify Collective, B2B, external sales channels, accounting integrations, and other advanced sales tools.

At the moment, we handle Norwegian VAT manually through Shopify collections with different VAT rates: 0%, 15%, and 25% VAT. In Norway, VAT is called MVA. This works to some extent, but it is not an ideal or fully standardized setup. We have already tested Shopify Collective and experienced that VAT calculations were not correct when the partner had a different tax setup.

We are also planning to integrate Shopify with Tripletex, which is a Norwegian accounting system. This integration should allow us to send EHF invoices, automate accounting, reconcile payments, and correctly transfer order, product, payment, and VAT data. In our view, these integrations and sales channels require a unified, standardized, and reliable VAT setup.

From previous dialogues, we understand that Shopify’s standard tax settings may handle the 25% VAT group of products, such as hardware and most standard products. However, this does not solve the need for reliable handling of products with 15% VAT and 0% VAT, such as supplements, books, education-related products, services, and other product groups. Today, this is handled through manual collections and overrides, which creates limitations when we want to use more advanced Shopify functionality.

Our main request is therefore that Shopify provides improved standard tax support for Norway, ideally through Shopify Tax or a similar tax solution that can automatically handle Norwegian VAT rates of 0%, 15%, and 25% at product level. This should work consistently across Shopify’s own features and sales channels, including Shopify Collective, B2B, integrations, external sales channels, and accounting systems.

Norway participates in the European internal market through the European Economic Area (EEA), although Norway is not part of the EU VAT area. Our second most important market after Norway is the EU. Our first priority is therefore a non-manual, standardized VAT setup for Norway. This would allow us to use Shopify’s advanced features and integrations properly, and it would also help justify moving to Shopify Plus. Our second priority is a better VAT-inclusive solution for EU sales, preferably with automatic VAT calculation and all relevant costs included for the customer where applicable. For the rest of the world, we will continue to use a VAT-exclusive setup for now.

We believe this would be highly valuable not only for Uno Vita AS, but also for many other Norwegian and Nordic businesses using Shopify. A standardized tax solution for Norway that properly supports 0%, 15%, and 25% VAT would make Shopify a much stronger platform for serious Norwegian merchants, especially those that need B2B, accounting integrations, multi-channel selling, Collective, and automated tax-compliant workflows.

This is a major issue for us and will strongly influence how we move forward with Shopify in the near future.

Could you please forward this request to the appropriate Shopify product or tax team and let us know whether improved Norwegian VAT support is planned or possible?

Best regards,

Uno Vita AS

Hello there @UNOVITA
I think it’s a valid feature request. Many Norwegian traders have the same challenge while handling 0%, 15% and 25% MVA in B2B, accounting integrations, Collective and multichannel sales. Manual collections and tax overrides are functional, but they have the potential to cause discrepancies as operations grow.

A product level tax standard for Norway would greatly enhance the accuracy, automation and would be more compatible with platforms such as Tripletex. By adding your feedback here you are helping to show demand, and hopefully this will be taken into consideration in future tax and commerce roadmap improvements.

I really hope so, we and other larger sites are waiting for this and will then probably move to Plus version.
