Feature Request: Product-level default for HS code and Country of Origin with per-variant override

(neutral/GMC-safe): “100% pure organic beeswax taper candles, handcrafted in small batches for intentional living.”

What feedback do you want?

Currently, HS code and Country of Origin must be set individually on every variant, even when all variants of a product are identical in classification and origin. For products with many variants (e.g. 17 color options of the same candle), this requires repetitive manual entry with no way to set a default at the product level.

Requested: Allow merchants to set a default HS code and Country of Origin at the product level, which all variants inherit automatically, with the option to override on individual variants when needed.

This would significantly reduce setup time for multi-variant products and improve data accuracy for Managed Markets and international shipping compliance.

Anyone else experiencing this issue? Drop a comment below. Once we receive 10 requests, we’ll build a Shopify app for it.

I think it’s clear that tons of merchants would have the same issue. However many may not understand that not making this setting per variant can effect approval for managed markets.

I think there’s a larger business case for this feature beyond merchant convenience.

The merchants most affected by this issue are often those with complex catalogs and high variant counts. Those are also frequently the merchants most likely to benefit from international expansion and generate significant cross-border sales volume.

When setting up Managed Markets requires repetitive compliance data entry across dozens or hundreds of variants, the result isn’t just extra work—it creates friction at a critical adoption point. Some merchants will postpone setup, some will leave products partially configured, and some may never fully onboard international selling.

The challenge is that Shopify may never see these merchants as feature requests or support tickets. They simply decide the setup effort isn’t worth the immediate return and move on.

A product-level inheritance model for HS codes and Country of Origin could remove a major onboarding obstacle without reducing compliance standards. Merchants would still have the ability to override values at the variant level when necessary.

This feels less like a merchant quality-of-life feature and more like infrastructure that could help increase successful Managed Markets adoption among the very merchants most capable of driving international GMV.

Hey @sophiatruth yes this is a valid and practical feature request
the fix : allow merchants to set a default HS code & country of origin at the product level which automatically applies to all variants if needed
this save repetitive data entry (e.g , settings the same HS code 17 times for 17 color variants ) and improves accuracy for managed markets & international shipping compliance
