Feature request: Support for llms.txt (AI crawler management)

Topic summary

A merchant is requesting native Shopify support for llms.txt, a file similar to robots.txt that manages access by AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, etc.).

The core issue:

  • The file must be placed at the domain root (e.g., https://yourstore.com/llms.txt)
  • Shopify currently doesn’t allow merchants or apps to create root-level files
  • This prevents merchants from controlling what content AI platforms can access for training or indexing

Current developments:

  • One app developer (clickfrom.ai) claims to have built a solution that automatically generates and maintains llms.txt at the store root, while also optimizing pages for AI crawler visibility
  • The app is currently in Shopify’s review queue awaiting approval
  • Another merchant reports their SEO audit tool is flagging the missing llms.txt file as an issue

Status: The request remains open, with merchants expressing concern that lack of support may impact SEO performance as AI-driven platforms become more prevalent.

Hi Shopify team and fellow merchants,

I’d like to request support for the emerging llms.txt standard — a file similar to robots.txt, but designed specifically to manage access by AI crawlers such as:

  • GPTBot (ChatGPT / OpenAI)

  • ClaudeBot (Anthropic)

  • PerplexityBot

  • Google-Extended

  • CCBot (Common Crawl)

To work correctly, the file must be located at the root of the domain:

Currently, Shopify does not allow apps or merchants to create files in the root directory, and this makes it impossible to implement llms.txt unless it is supported natively by the platform.

As AI-driven platforms become more common and content usage grows, it’s increasingly important for merchants to have control over what content is accessible for AI training or indexing — just like we already do with robots.txt.

I hope Shopify will consider adding native support for this feature. If other merchants feel the same, please join in and support this request!

Thanks for your time!

Hi @ella1234 , Great question—controlling llms.txt is becoming as vital as robots.txt. We’ve already tackled this with clickfrom.ai, a Shopify app that automatically generates and maintains an up-to-date llms.txt at your store’s root. It detects every change to your products, collections, landing pages, and blog posts, then pushes fresh directives so leading AI crawlers—ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity, and others—always see the right content.

Beyond the file itself, clickfrom.ai applies AI-specific optimizations to product, collection, and blog pages to boost your overall visibility in AI chatbots. You can read more about our approach on our blog: https://www.clickfrom.ai/blog

Our app is in Shopify’s review queue now and should appear in the App Store shortly. When it goes live, I’d be very happy to let you know and set you up with early access.

I’m really hoping they get some movement on this. My SEO audit tool is already reporting that this is missing from my site. Hopefully Shopify can stay ahead of this before it really starts affecting the SEO for our shops.
