## AI-generated summary

Merchants are requesting the ability to assign Shopify shipping profiles directly from the product edit page, instead of leaving the product workflow and going to Settings → Shipping and delivery. The main concern is not just inconvenience, but that new products can silently remain in the default shipping profile and charge incorrect rates.

Workarounds discussed include organizing profiles by product type, vendor, tags, or other rules, then bulk-adding products from the shipping profile page. For larger catalogs, saved views, bulk editing, third-party apps, or automation were suggested.

A concrete automation path was clarified: Shopify Flow can use “Send Admin API Request” with the `deliveryProfileUpdate` mutation and `variantsToAssociate`, but it must use product variant GIDs, not product IDs. Triggers should run after variants exist, such as “Product variant added,” and assignments should be verified afterward.

Shopify support reportedly confirmed there is currently no product-page shipping profile field and no native Flow action for delivery profiles. The feature request remains unresolved and ongoing.

Hi @altoe Welcome To Shopify Community So Yeah, this is a known limitation — there’s no direct shipping profile field on the product page itself, you have to go through Settings \> Shipping and delivery to assign it. Workaround: if your profiles are set up by product type/vendor, new products can auto-inherit the right profile without extra steps. Worth posting this in Shopify’s Feedback area too, since it’s a common pain point.

Hi @altoe
I agree, it would be much easier to manage this directly from the product editor. For now, you can assign products to a shipping profile from Settings → Shipping and delivery → General shipping rates, then add the relevant products to the profile there.

If you’re regularly adding products with the same shipping rules, setting up your profiles based on product type/vendor can also reduce the amount of manual assignment needed.

Hi there @altoe
I’ve found that workflow can seem artificially disjointed. Shipping profiles are handled separately because they are not a product level setting, and can be used on multiple products and locations.

A handy workaround is to make or update the shipping profile first, then you add products to it from the profile’s product management section. For large catalogs, saved product views and mass editing can also help limit the number of times you switch pages. It would be nice to be able to assign a profile right in product editor, especially for shops where it sells new products regularly.

+1 — jumping out of the product editor into Settings → Shipping and delivery just to attach a profile is a real workflow break, especially when you’re onboarding SKUs one after another.

Native Shopify still doesn’t put a profile control on the product page. Practical options today:

1. Tag or set product type / vendor consistently, then bulk-filter inside the profile’s Add products picker.

2. Shopify Flow + Send Admin API Request with deliveryProfileUpdate / variantsToAssociate (variant GIDs) when Product created matches your rule.

3. A rule-based app that keeps evaluating new and updated products so you’re not hand-picking each edit.

Disclosure: I work on ShipAssign ([ShipAssign: Profile Rules - Automatically assign products to the correct shipping profiles | Shopify App Store](https://apps.shopify.com/shipassign)). If assignment follows a stable rule (type / tag / vendor / weight / SKU / collections / title / category / inventory / shipping requirements / variant options), you can define it once, preview matches, review conflicts, and leave it running so new products don’t silently stay on General. Free up to 500 variants if you want to pilot a slice first.

Worth filing on community.shopify.dev too so the shipping team sees the product-page request — forum posts alone rarely reach them.

Adding a merchant data point, because this one cost us real money.

I audited a client catalog of roughly 275 one-of-a-kind products and found about 8% sitting in the default shipping profile - including live, in-stock oversized items charging the small-goods rate instead of the oversized one. We had been absorbing most of the true shipping cost on those for months. Nothing in the admin surfaced it. We only caught it by exporting the whole catalog through a third-party app that exposes shipping profile as a column, then diffing that against collection membership.

The workflow friction in the original post is real, but the silent-default part is the expensive bit. Someone adding a new oversized piece gets no indication that a profile exists, that this product needs claiming, or that it just defaulted to the standard rate.

developercodesapient - on the Flow plus Send Admin API Request route with deliveryProfileUpdate / variantsToAssociate, has anyone confirmed that working end to end? An older thread on this had someone attempt it and report they could not find variant references in the payload. If variantsToAssociate with variant GIDs does the job, that is genuinely useful and worth writing up, because the alternative right now is a paid app for something that feels like it should be native.

Shopify support confirmed to me this week that there is no profile field on the product page and no native Flow action for delivery profiles. Longer write-up with the full breakdown here: [Shipping profiles are invisible on the product page — a use case where that costs real money](https://community.shopify.com/t/shipping-profiles-are-invisible-on-the-product-page-a-use-case-where-that-costs-real-money/690149)

Yes — variantsToAssociate with variant GIDs does work end to end. The gotcha people hit is almost always “product GID in the payload” or “Product created fired before variants existed,” not the mutation itself.

Confirmed in the community:

• [Adding products (or variants) to a Shipping Profile with api](https://community.shopify.com/t/adding-products-or-variants-to-a-shipping-profile-with-api/572600) — merchant tried productUpdate with deliveryProfileId (doesn’t exist), then deliveryProfileUpdate + variantsToAssociate with a ProductVariant GID and it worked.

• Flow Liquid that others have used successfully for the Send Admin API Request body:

{

“id”: “gid://shopify/DeliveryProfile/YOUR\_PROFILE\_ID”,

“profile”: {

```
"variantsToAssociate": {{ product.variants | map: "id" | json }}
```

}

}

Practical checklist that usually clears the “couldn’t find variant references” failure:

1. Mutation must be deliveryProfileUpdate (not productUpdate).

2. Profile id = full GID gid://shopify/DeliveryProfile/… (number alone works in productVariants search filters, not in the mutation).

3. Associate variant GIDs only — product.variants | map: “id” is the Flow pattern; bare product ids fail.

4. Prefer Product variant added (or wait until variants exist) over a bare Product created trigger — brand-new products can fire before variant IDs are stable.

5. Plain ASCII quotes in the JSON action body; curly quotes from a docs paste break the request silently.

6. After the action, read the profile back (deliveryProfiles / profileItems, or productVariants with delivery\_profile\_id) — some stores have seen a clean mutation response without the assignment sticking.

Your longer write-up on the silent-default cost is spot on; the Flow path handles enforcement going forward, but it won’t put a profile control on the product page. Worth keeping the Help Center / community.shopify.dev request alive for visibility.
