FedEx Buy Shipping Label Quote Showing One Price, Final Charge Much Higher After Purchase — Same Weight/Dimensions, Only Happening with FedEx

I’m trying to find out if other Shopify merchants are dealing with this because this is causing serious financial damage to our store.

We are seeing repeated cases where Shopify’s “Buy Shipping Label” screen shows one shipping price for FedEx, but after purchasing the label, the shipping label screen shows a dramatically higher amount—even though the package dimensions and weight are exactly the same.

Example from a recent order:

Shipping service:
FedEx Standard Overnight

Package dimensions:
16 x 16 x 10 in

Weight:
33.6 oz

At the time of purchase inside the Buy Shipping Label flow, Shopify quoted the label at:
$54.45

After purchasing that exact same label, when I went into the shipping label details screen, Shopify showed the shipping cost as:
$168.71

Same shipment.
Same service.
Same package details.

There were no:

  • dimension changes
  • weight corrections
  • address corrections
  • post-shipment carrier audits

This was not a package correction issue.

Shopify Support responded saying this happens because checkout and label estimates are based on default package dimensions and product weights, and that final carrier charges can differ.

But that explanation does not apply here because this issue is happening inside the actual Buy Shipping Label purchase flow after the exact package dimensions and exact shipment weight were already entered.

This issue is also only happening with FedEx labels.

We do NOT see this problem with USPS or UPS labels.

We checked multiple expedited FedEx orders from this week and found that many of them had 2x–3x increases from the quoted rate shown before purchase.

Support also said these are “expected” surcharges like residential delivery and fuel charges, but if these are standard and predictable charges, why are they not included in the original quote shown before purchase?

Merchants make fulfillment and pricing decisions based on those displayed rates.

Showing one price and charging another—especially jumping from $54.45 to $168.71 for the same shipment—is creating serious profitability issues.

Has anyone else experienced this specifically with FedEx through Shopify Shipping?

Have you successfully gotten reimbursement or billing credits?

Did Shopify ever properly explain why the quoted rate inside the Buy Shipping Label modal does not match the final charged amount?

Would really appreciate hearing if others are seeing the same issue.

There are many many threads here about shipping struggles. Read previous posts. Do a quick search and see if there are any topics that apply to your situation or are similar enough.

This happened to us as well, and the explanation given was that we needed to disconnect our Fedex account to get Shopify’s discounted rates. The only reason we connected our Fedex account was because we received an urgent Shopify message to reconnect our Fedex account by a certain deadline to continue to use FedEx as a shipping option. There was no indication that doing this would triple our rates, and no choice was given to NOT reconnect. It was a warning type of message on the platform. Shame on Shopify for not taking responsibility. The fix is to delete your FexEx account from the shipping platform.
