Fix the issue with listing of counties for Ireland

Topic summary

A store owner highlights a persistent address formatting issue for Irish orders.

The problem: Many Irish locations share names between counties and cities/towns (e.g., Dublin, Galway, Limerick, Tipperary). When orders display only the county field, it’s unclear whether customers mean the county or the city/town with the same name, forcing the store owner to look up Eircodes (Irish postal codes) every time.

Proposed solutions:

  • Add city/town names to the county dropdown listings
  • Prefix all county entries with “Co.” (County) to distinguish them from cities/towns
  • Make the county field optional since customers already enter city/town information in a previous field

The issue remains unresolved despite being easily fixable.

Just a small rant in that this issue could be resolved so easily, but still hasn’t

In Ireland we have cities and towns with the same names as some of the counties.

Example: Galway is a county, but it is also a city, same for Dublin, for Monaghan, for Limerick, for Tipperary and many others.

When I receive an order it lists the county in this format: Tipperary, Limerick, Dublin. I have no idea unless an Eircode is added whether we are talking about the county or a town/city. I have to look it up every time using the Eircode finder.

Either prefix all the entries on the listing with Co. and don’t make the field required (leave blank) as the customer has already entered the town or city in the previous field

OR

Change the listing to include the town/cities

Carlow

Co. Carlow

Cavan

Co. Cavan

Cork

Co. Cork

Dublin

Co. Dublin

Galway

Co. Galway

etc.
