Fixed variant with metafields and/or bulk edits

I’ve read every article online and tested every app about metafields. However, we need the simplest function ever: We’re selling posters and we have following sizes: 21x30, 30x40, 50x70 and 70x100 and we need to provide certain information to our printer:

  1. TYPE: type of product: tshirt or poster for example

  2. Variant SKU for example Poster_21x30

  3. Printfile : link

We could do this through bulkeditor for metafields or through an app. But it’s just to manually and unsecure through an app.. This would be the easiest thing ever if Shopify could export the csv with the metafields. Is there someway we can add it and import it through a csv ourself?

Is there some way you can add variants to a product temple or decide that every variant always has the metafield autofilled? For example 21x30 has metafield poster_21x30?

My name is Daniel and I work at Ablestar with the Bulk Product Editor app (https://apps.shopify.com/bulk-product-editor). You should be able to use our free plan to quickly update the metafields from a spreadsheet.

Once you have the app installed you’ll just need a spreadsheet with two columns:

  • An identifier for the product (SKU, Variant ID, Product Handle etc..)
  • The Printfile URL

After you upload the file in the Spreadsheet Edit section of the app you can choose the correct metafield for the Printfile URL and update the products that way:

We do also have a feature called automatic product rules but it’s only available on the paid plans (though we could set up a trial for you). With it you can create rules like “If a variant’s option 1 value is 21x30, set a metafield to poster_21x30”. Once you have a rule created it will automatically run against you products each time they’re updated.

Hi there,

Unfortunately, Shopify doesn’t have a way to create a CSV with Metafield values included.

Our Report Toaster app could help with this. We could create a calculated field for you that either acted like a formula and/or used an existing metafield. Then we could create a report and schedule a CSV to be emailed directly to your printer. Please feel free to take a look and reach out to support to help get you setup.

Hey there Alex,

The Shopify Admin currently doesn’t support metafields export or import through a CSV file.

For metafields export, our app EZ Exporter might be able to help with this. You can create a custom Product/Variant CSV export including the metafields you need.

You can include product/variant metafields as part of the Order CSV export as well (each line item will be a separate row and you can specify which product or variant metafield to export for each line item row).
