I understand that Shopify does not refund the initial credit card processing fees on a refunded item. I don’t think that is fair since they don’t pay fees on refunded transactions, but that is not the main reason I am asking my question. The issue I am seeing is that when the money is taken back out of my account, Shopify is taking the original pre-fee amount out of my account. So, they are getting the fees twice!
For example, I sell something for $180, the amount charged to the customer is $194.16 because of tax. Shopify deposits $194.16 minus $7.87 for fees or $186.29. Then, if I refund the sale because Shopify marks it as a high chance of fraud, they don’t just take back $186.29; they take back $194.16! So, in the end, I am out $7.87 x 2 = $15.74 because someone tried to use a stolen credit card. This actually incentivizes Shopify to mark an order as fraudulent; they get twice the revenue!
Yes, I understand I can change the system to manual so it only gets charged once I look at the sale, but that adds work for me and my staff. In the end, I shouldn’t have to make my life harder to keep Shopify from stealing money! Am I missing something here?
