Getting refunded for unused account

Hello i was just wondering if anyone has ever heard of getting refunded after closing their account. I paid for a third party company to build me a shopify page a few months ago. I was never able to figure it out back then so i havent looked at it since. Apparently shopify has been charging me since, when i had already paid the third party. There was never any talk of paying a monthly fee from what i remember. I never noticed it on the bill until now and it was coming through on paypal which is what i paid the third party and now i feel like i got scammed and ripped off by being charged an absolute fortune over the past atleast 6 months for something I haven’t touched since the 1st day. I was hoping to try and get some of that money back. Would i reach out paypal or shopify first? Would i need some sort of proof i havent used it at all? If anyone has any success with this please share the steps to get the process started.

Hi @Ashley_Hammill Welcome To Shopify Community Start with Shopify support directly, not PayPal, since it’s their subscription and only they can actually process a refund or account credit. Go to Shopify Help Center, open a chat/ticket, and ask specifically for a review of unused billing since store creation, most reps can pull your store’s activity log which will show it was never set up or opened. Have your store URL and the PayPal transaction dates ready. Shopify won’t guarantee a refund for past months since technically the plan was active and billed correctly, but they do sometimes make exceptions for genuinely untouched stores, especially if you explain clearly it was never configured. If they decline, you can still dispute the charges through PayPal as a backup, but Shopify first gives you the best shot at a full or partial refund without it turning into a formal dispute.

Hay @Ashley_Hammill

hope you’re doing well!

Me too! I’d contact Shopify first and explain the situation, especially since the store hasn’t been used. If the charges were through PayPal, I’d also check the billing agreement and keep any invoices or payment record as proof.

Hi there @Ashley_Hammill
Being a Shopify Partner, I would first isolate the third party build fee from Shopify’s ongoing subscription charges. The third party’s charge usually doesn’t include payment for the Shopify subscription unless you were charged as part of your agreement for that. Review your Shopify billing history and PayPal auto payment agreement to know what exactly were charged when. If you were charged unlawfully, or even after you cancelled, keep a record of the billing history, cancelation date and correspondence with the third party. After you do that, you can dispute the PayPal transactions in question, if applicable.
