Gettting email newsletter signups?

Topic summary

A Shopify store owner is struggling to grow their weekly email newsletter beyond 5 subscribers and facing two technical issues:

Problem 1: Signup links don’t work outside Shopify

  • Shopify Email’s built-in forms are designed primarily for on-site use
  • Suggested solutions include:
    • Creating a shareable URL through Shopify Admin > Marketing > Automations > Forms
    • Using Google Forms or Typeform with Zapier integration
    • Switching to third-party platforms like Mailchimp or Klaviyo for better external link support

Problem 2: Subscriber discount not functioning

  • Error message appears when trying to select a discount
  • Recommended fix:
    • First create the discount in Shopify Admin > Discounts
    • Then attach it to the signup form
    • Test with a sample email to verify

Growth strategies suggested:

  • Share signup links across social media bios and relevant groups
  • Create a dedicated landing page with strong call-to-action
  • Run giveaways requiring newsletter subscription
  • Add signup prompts to order confirmation emails
  • Use post-purchase surveys with discount incentives to organically grow the list

The discussion remains open with solutions provided but no confirmation of resolution from the original poster.

I publish a weekly email newsletter. Having trouble getting subscribers. Is there an easy way to post a link on sites other than Shopify? I am emailing it via Shopify email marketing. Got like 5 subscribers via my Shopify website.

Thank you for your reply. My issue is I have treid to create a link to the subscribe button in Shopify and it does not work outside shopify on other social media. Also I created a discount for subscribing and it says select a discount. When I do it says no discount found. HELP!

It sounds like you’re putting in the effort to grow your newsletter—great job! Let’s tackle both issues one by one.

1. Getting a Shareable Signup Link Outside Shopify

Since you’re using Shopify Email, the built-in forms are designed primarily for your Shopify site. However, you can create a direct signup link that works anywhere, including social media. Here’s how:

Option 1: Use a Shopify Form with an External Link1. Go to Shopify Admin > Marketing > Automations > Forms (or Install a free form app like Shopify Forms).

  1. Set up your newsletter signup form and make sure it’s linked to your email list.
  2. Copy the form’s URL (you may need to use the embed feature to generate a standalone link).
  3. Share this URL on social media, email signatures, or blogs.

Option 2: Use a Google Form or Typeform

If Shopify doesn’t generate a direct link, create a Google Form or Typeform that collects emails and automatically adds them to your Shopify list using Zapier.

Option 3: Use a Third-Party Email Platform with Shopify

Consider tools like Mailchimp or Klaviyo, which offer better signup form links that you can use anywhere. These can sync back to Shopify.

2. Fixing the Discount Issue for Subscribers

The error likely means that the discount isn’t properly linked to your signup form. Here’s how to fix it:

  1. Create the Discount First:

    • Go to Shopify Admin > Discounts > Create Discount
    • Select “Automatic” or “Discount Code” (choose one)
    • Set the condition to apply to new subscribers
    • Save the discount
  2. Attach the Discount to Your Signup Form:

    • In Shopify Forms (or email settings), select the discount from the list
    • If Shopify doesn’t recognize it, try refreshing the page and selecting it again
  3. Test It:

    • Sign up using a test email and see if the discount is applied

Next Steps to Get More Subscribers

Now that your signup link and discount work, here are some ways to boost your subscribers:

  • Add the signup link to your Instagram bio, Twitter/X, and Facebook
  • Post in relevant Facebook groups where your audience hangs out
  • Create a simple landing page on Shopify with a strong CTA and direct traffic there
  • Run a small giveaway or contest where entry = subscribing to your newsletter
  • Mention the discount + signup link in your order confirmation email
  • Use surveys with a discount incentive – A short post-purchase survey (like “What made you choose this product?”) with a newsletter signup option to receive the discount is a great way to gather customer insights and subscribers organically
