Global Ecommerce Ops: Shopify Expansion Stores vs Shopify Markets

Hello,

I’d like your opinion on Shopify Expansion Stores vs Shopify Markets.

Context:

We are a global ecomm business that sells products that contain high-powered batteries (up to 800w). It is worth noting - our products and batteries fall under ‘dangerous items’ for many regions (harder legal requirements in the EU, softer in the US).

So far, managing our global ecomm has been through expansion stores (legacy setup) - each region has its dedicated store with its own inventory and content. However, the management of these stores becomes repetitive and can be counterproductive during the busier periods. Shopify Markets can be a good alternative solution from our research.

Question:

  • Considering the above scenario, on a high level, what do you suggest: Shopify Expansion Stores or Shopify Markets?
  • We do understand managing region-based inventory on Shopify Markets is highly customisable. But what about the static content, i.e., webpages, menu items, etc.?
  • We have a team of devs with the skills to customise themes to localise items. So theme customisation recommendations are welcome.
  • Existing SEO: each store/domain currently has its own developed SEO/ local SEO. What will the impact be like if we merge all expansion stores into one single store?

Appreciate your input.

Thank you!
