My Google Ads account was suspended for “Dangerous Products/Services” because we sell tactical accessories (plate carriers, holsters, optics, slings, magazines, lights) — NO firearms or ammunition. Google’s policy seems to flag any tactical-adjacent business by default. What is the most effective path to reinstate when our actual catalog is 100% accessories, and how do we structure the appeal so it gets human review instead of auto-rejection?
Hello Hmjeh, my name is Emmanuel, founder of FeedArmy, and your host for today’s Shopify AMA for Google’s AI Overviews.
I want to gently push back on the premise here, because it’ll save you months of failed appeals: “no firearms or ammunition” is not the line Google draws. Their Dangerous Products policy also prohibits ads for any part or component that’s essential to or enhances the functionality of a gun, and their own list of examples explicitly includes ammunition clips (magazines) and scopes and sights (optics). Weapon-mounted lights and slings are high-risk for the same reason, the general pattern is that if it attaches to the gun and isn’t a safety device (lock, chamber block, safe, case), assume it’s banned. Holsters are also a known problem item. Plate carriers are really the only thing on your list that’s normally fine, since protective gear doesn’t enhance a firearm’s function.
So the suspension likely isn’t a misclassification you can appeal away, parts of the catalog genuinely violate the policy as written. That changes the strategy:
1. Fix before you appeal. Remove magazines, optics, and other gun-attaching products from your Merchant Center feed AND from any landing pages your ads point to. Landing pages matter more than people think, a compliant ad pointing to a page that also sells magazines will still get flagged. Some sellers split their site so ads only ever land on compliant category pages (armor, apparel, bags, med kits).
2. Then appeal once, with specifics. Google says accounts are only reinstated in “compelling circumstances,” and vague appeals get auto-denied. Say exactly what you changed and when: “On [date] we removed all magazines and optics from our product feed and restricted ad landing pages to body armor and load-bearing gear.” Concrete, dated actions are what gets a real review, there’s no phrasing trick that forces human eyes onto an unchanged account.
3. Don’t re-appeal repeatedly with the same info, and do NOT open a new account, that’s a “circumventing systems” violation and leads to permanent bans across related accounts. You have at least 6 months from the suspension date to appeal, so take the time to actually clean things up first.
If the core of your revenue is magazines/optics, the honest answer is Google Ads isn’t available for those products, and you’ll want to lean on SEO, email, affiliate, and industry-specific channels for that side of the catalog while advertising only the compliant gear on Google. Good luck!
