Google Analytics 4 / Google Tag Manager - Double Tracking

Topic summary

A user implemented Google Tag Manager (GTM) and connected it to Google Analytics 4, but is experiencing double-counting of page views. They suspect both the new GTM tag and an old GA implementation are tracking simultaneously.

Troubleshooting steps already taken:

  • Removed GA ID from Shopify’s Online Shop > Configuration > Google Analytics
  • Searched through Liquid theme files but couldn’t locate the old tracking code

Additional issue:
When testing GTM with Google Tag Assistant, an “Invalid or missing account ID” error appears in red, despite believing everything is correctly implemented.

The user is seeking help to:

  • Disable the old GA data stream
  • Resolve the Tag Assistant error
  • Properly configure GTM/GA4 to avoid duplicate tracking

Good morning,

I implemented the Google Tag Manager yesterday and connected it to GA4. I noticed during testing that e.g. Page views are counted twice. Through the GTM tag and the old version of GA (that’s my theory).

I would like to turn off the data stream from GA, but I don’t know how. The following code can be found in the source code: (CSV 1). I have already removed the GA ID from: Online Shop > Configuration > Google Analytics, I have also searched through Liquides, but did not find the appropriate place.

I have another small construction site, which initially does not have the priority, as the problem above is that when I test the GTM with the Google Tag Assistant, I get the following displayed in red: Invalid or missing account ID, although everything is implemented correctly.

I would really appreciate any help :slightly_smiling_face:

greeting

Christian
