Google Search Console (GSC) began flagging a Shopify-generated URL on many stores starting Dec 10–11, 2022: /.well-known/shopify/monorail/unstable/produce_batch (and sometimes /monorail/v1/produce). GSC reports “Blocked due to other 4xx issues.”
- Context: The endpoint is part of Shopify’s “Monorail” analytics (backend telemetry). 4xx are client errors; robots.txt controls crawl directives.
- Shopify’s position: It’s a harmless internal endpoint unintentionally exposed to indexing after an update. Fixes were pushed to stop indexing, instruct crawlers to ignore Monorail paths, and return 404/405. Merchants generally need not act; some used GSC “Validate Fix.”
- Outcomes: At least one merchant saw “Page indexing issues successfully fixed” by 1/7/23 after validation. Many others still report warnings or reoccurrence.
- Ad ecosystem impact: Several report Google Ads disapprovals (labels: Malicious software, Circumventing systems) and Google Business Profile URL rejection, with Google support citing the Monorail URLs (and in one case an AJAX cart URL) as problematic.
- Disagreement: Most accept it’s benign; a few allege malicious traffic or “fake IPs,” and indexing despite robots.txt.
Status: Partially mitigated but not fully resolved for all. Ads-related disapprovals remain a key open issue; further confirmation from Shopify/Google is sought.
