Google UA vs GA4 Analytics, how do I switch?

Topic summary

Main issue: Switching from Universal Analytics (UA) to Google Analytics 4 (GA4) on a Shopify store. The store admin created a GA4 property and obtained a GA4 Measurement ID (format G-XXXX), but cannot find where to enter it in Shopify. The previous UA field won’t accept the GA4 ID.

Context: The user verified the shop owner’s Google account, used Shopify’s “Manage pixels,” and followed setup instructions but lacks a place to paste the GA4 tag/ID. A screenshot was shared showing the blocked UA field; exact UI details aren’t fully clear from the post.

Responses: One reply says GA4 is “by default” in Shopify and suggests using the Google channel integration, asking for a clearer screenshot of the specific issue.

Status: No concrete resolution. Key unanswered questions:

  • Where in Shopify should the GA4 Measurement ID be added (if not in the old UA field)?
  • Whether GA4 must be connected via the Shopify Google channel app/integration instead of manual ID entry.

Next steps suggested: Use the Google channel and provide detailed screenshots.

I am having trouble installing a GA4 tag to my shopify store. I am the admin of the shop and verified the shop owner’s google account l before I tried setting up my Google Analytics ID. The email was verified and I went to ‘manage pixels’ where I was able to create a new Google Analytics property. However, when I got the measurement ID (G-XXX…) and tried to follow the instructions to install my tag, there is no where for me to put it. I tried to put it where I previously had my UA tag, but it won’t allow me to put it there (see screenshot). How can I fix this to get my Google Analytics ID attached to my Shopify account?
