Google vs Shopify Product Codes not matching

Google Taxonomy for a shirt is [Apparel & Accessories > Clothing > Shirts & Tops]

Shopify Taxonomy for a shirt is [Apparel & Accessories > Clothing > Shirts]

I use Thrive/Shopventory to control our inventory. The Product Category section there is based on the Google Taxonomy list only. I can’t choose the Shopify product category when updating my listings to sync to Shopify.

However, in my product listing, Shopify has a warning that says, “Update to Clothing Tops in Clothing or search for another category. The current category was retired.”

It was my understanding that the Google Taxonomy helps to categorize a product for search results on Google.

My concern is that if Shopify is using its own taxonomy, then doesn’t that jeopardize the position of the products either on Google Shopping search results AND/OR Shopify Shops depending on which Taxonomy you follow?

Or do these Product Categories not matter as much as it seems??

Since a month ago, Shopify has setup it’s own category, that no longer matches the Google Product Category taxonomy.

My recommendation, is to update the values in Google Merchant Center using rules so that they are correct again.
