I thought it would be wonderful if other makers could share the approved CUSMA / USMCA HS codes that they have been successfully shipping under.
I can’t find codes for most of what i make & i know many are in the same boat ![]()
Hi @HennaCanada!
It sounds like you’re looking to tap into a community knowledge base of HS codes that are already being used successfully under CUSMA / USMCA so you and other makers don’t have to reinvent the wheel every time. That’s a really good idea, especially since small makers often struggle with classification.
A few thoughts that might help you move this forward:
1. Community sharing approach:
-
You could start a shared spreadsheet (Google Sheets, Airtable, etc.) where makers can enter:
-
Product description (plain language)
-
HS code they’ve used
-
Country shipped to/from
-
Whether it was accepted without issues
-
-
This way, others can cross-reference before trying to classify their own items.
2. Official resources:
-
Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has a Customs Tariff tool where you can search HS codes:
CBSA Customs Tariff -
The U.S. has the HTS (Harmonized Tariff Schedule) lookup:
HTS Search Tool -
These can feel overwhelming, but they are the official references.
3. Peer networks:
Since you’re already connecting with other makers, you might get the best traction by asking in Facebook groups, Reddit threads, or Etsy/Shopify seller forums — other people making handmade goods are usually dealing with the same pain points.
4. Important caution:
While peer-shared codes can be a huge help, customs authorities ultimately hold you responsible for correct classification. So if you use someone else’s HS code, it’s smart to double-check it against your own product description.
