Hello I’m having some trouble sorting out combined discounts. So I have two large discounts that I don’t want to be able to combine with each other, but I also have two smaller discounts I would like to be able to combine with them (but not each other.)
So, for example, you could the 10% off discount with the 5% discount, or the 15% discount with the 5% discount, but you can’t get the 10% and 15% together. If that makes sense?
I can’t seem to sort out how to work this. Disallowing the 10 and 15 to combine seems to also disallow the 5 even when it’s set to combine with anything (because the 10 and 15 are not, set that way.)
Sounds like you have way too much desire to over-complicate things.
A 5% discount (and even 10%) is not even worth having. From a customer’s standpoint, unless we’re talking hundreds or thousands in savings, I don’t even bother with those. It’s too much hassle for me as a customer. Save a dollar by adding this code and that code, but it won’t work if you add this one? That would make me laugh at you if I was browsing…
Reducing the price by setting a compare-at price would eliminate at least some of your issue. I would recommend not having such minute differences in discounts.
Combining this for clarity: I hear what you’re saying, and I appreciate your input, but that doesn’t really answer my question. The 5% discount is specific to a certain item, and I would like it to be able to combine with more general discounts.
My discounts are automatically applied, and while they don’t save “thousands” of dollars, some can save hundreds. I’m not trying to make things difficult for my customers, I’m sorry if it read that way or if it seems silly. Just looking for some more constructive help.
Product A for 49.99 and get 5% checkout and have 5% discount automatically for a subtotal of 47.49
Product A for 49.99 regular price (compare-at price) crossed out with new price of 47.49 and perhaps a “sale” badge attached
Both of these end the same. The difference is 1 is a discount and 2 gets rid of the need for a “discount”.
As for Shopify discounts as a whole, what you want isn’t an option in Shopify. You’re hitting a brick wall because that’s not how Shopify Discounts work. It wont allow that type of customization of combinations. It’s combineable with other products or it’s not. Unless you change the discount type to either shipping or order, your only option is to look for a discount app.
It’s a native Shopify limitation. Use the code for the smaller one as an automatic discount and for the bigger one as a code discount. Make the auto discount “combines with other offers” and the big codes “do not combine”. This makes 5% stack with either, but it stops 10 and 15 together at the checkout stage.
Thank you so much for your reply! So for the discounts, the 10% off is a discount code for subscribing to our newsletter, this is one we always have active. It’s set not to combine with larger discounts (like 15-25% off which we do for sales periodically.) Whichever is the larger discount applies, and that’s perfectly fine, it’s been working great.
Where I’m having an issues is that we’ve recently added shipping insurance, which I’m trying to cover the cost of as a discount for people who purchase it. I have it set up as a Buy A get B at 5% off discount, it’s set to combine with other discounts, but it doesn’t seem to be doing that. Presumably, because the other discounts are set to NOT combine.
So, basically, I’m trying to find a way that 5% discount can apply to a person’s whole order, even with the 10% or 15% discounts, but that the 10% discounts and 15% discounts can’t apply to each other.
It sounds like that might not be a thing though. I will look into apps that might be able to help. Thanks again for your time, I really appreciate it!
To get your specific setup working where the 5% can pair with the 10% or 15%, but the 10% and 15% stay separate you need to configure them like this:
The “large” discounts must have combination setting enabled for the specific category of the “small” discount.
The “small” discount must have combination setting enabled for the category of the “large” discounts.
If one discount in a pair has combinations disabled pair will not work. To prevent the two large ones from merging ensure they belong to the same category as Shopify generally limits customers to one discount per category per order by default.
