Hello, I am a Chinese merchant and the products we sell are relatively heavy, which may make transportation costs expensive. In order to reduce costs for our customers, we want to make transportation costs as accurate as possible rather than approximate numbers. In China, most logistics service providers calculate transportation costs in the form of fixed fees+kilogram fees. If I set transportation costs in tiers of 0.1kg, it will be a very large workload, and transportation costs will also change with the international market, making modifications very complicated. Can we add a method of calculating transportation costs based on fixed fees and kilogram fees?
Setting manual 0.1kg tiers is the trap. You end up maintaining hundreds of rows and they go stale the moment a carrier reprices.
For a base fee plus per-kg model you want the rate calculated at checkout, not stored as a table. Two ways to get there. Shopify’s carrier-calculated shipping (the third-party carrier service / Shipping API) can return a live rate straight from your logistics provider’s quote or a formula. If you don’t have a carrier integration, a calculated-rates app lets you define base + per-kg + dimensional rules and computes the exact number per order.
Native weight tiers really only hold up when your pricing is coarse. The moment it is fixed fee + per-kg you have outgrown them, and forcing it into tiers is the workload you are feeling.
Are your carriers giving you an API to pull live rates, or just a rate sheet you would have to encode yourself?
Hello, they just updated a table for us, and each operator has their own advantageous channels with lower prices and faster delivery times. Therefore, if we calculate directly based on the fixed fee+kilogram fee, it will be much simpler
I understand your concern. Instead of creating numerous weight-based shipping tiers, I recommend using Intuitive Shipping. It allows you to set shipping formulas based on a fixed fee plus a per-kilogram charge, ensuring accurate shipping costs for heavy products. You can also easily update rates when logistics costs change, saving significant time and reducing manual work.
For Shopify, this should be easy to implement, but currently it still doesn’t have this feature
