Help Needed: Fixing "Blocked by robots.txt" Issue on My Shopify Store

Topic summary

A Shopify store owner discovered 34 pages blocked by robots.txt according to Google Search Console, potentially impacting site indexing and visibility. They suspect three recently installed apps (SEOANT, Wholesale Lock, Wholesalehelper) may have caused the issue.

Key concerns:

  • Need to review and modify robots.txt to unblock important product/collection pages
  • Ensure proper Google indexing of key pages
  • Prevent future indexing problems

The user requested developer assistance, as they’re unfamiliar with making these technical changes.

Responses provided two solutions:

  1. Manual approach: Check if blocked pages are actually important (cart/checkout pages are intentionally blocked by Shopify). If critical pages are affected, edit robots.txt.liquid via Theme > Edit Code to change “disallow” to “allow.”

  2. App-based solution: Use Avada SEO Suite’s Pro Plan for easier robots.txt editing without coding.

SEOAnt representative offered direct developer support but noted the user had already uninstalled their app. They provided a reinstall link with a 30% discount coupon (SEOAnt 30% Jeffery) for troubleshooting assistance.

Status: Issue remains unresolved; user seeking expert help to implement changes.

I recently received a notification from Google Search Console stating that 34 pages on my Shopify website are blocked by robots.txt, which is affecting my website’s indexing and visibility on Google. I think it is due to changes made to the theme using 3 apps that we installed including SEOANT, Wholesale Lock, Wholesalehelper

I understand that Shopify automatically generates the robots.txt file, but I would like assistance in:

  1. Reviewing and modifying robots.txt to ensure that important pages (such as product and collection pages) are not blocked.
  2. Allowing Google to index key pages, especially those that may have been restricted in error.
  3. Confirming the correct setup to prevent indexing issues in the future.

Could you please help me override the necessary settings or guide me on how to make these changes effectively?

Thank you so much! But I am not sure how to do this and I need shopify developer to do that on my behalf. Can you please help?

I need help doing these steps. I am not familiar on how to do this? Can you recommend an expert?

HI @scentualaroma1

First of all, you need to check the report from Google to see if the 34 pages blocked by robots.txt on your Shopify website are important pages.

The message “Blocked by robots.txt” means that your website’s robots.txt file is preventing Googlebot from crawling those pages. Some Shopify URLs are intentionally blocked by robots.txt to protect your SEO—the cart page is one example. You can find more details on Shopify’s robots.txt guide here.

  • If these 34 pages include cart, checkout, or pages with long parameter strings, then no changes are needed, as this setup is correct.
  • However, if they include important pages that you need to be indexed, you can modify the robots.txt file to change “disallow” to “allow.”

You can access this file by going to Theme > Edit Code > robots.txt.liquid.

If you’re not comfortable working with code, you can use the Avada SEO Suite app. Our Pro Plan allows you to edit the robots.txt file directly within the app.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions.

Best,
Daisy
