I’m using the basic plan for my store and I’ve been using the reports to track monthly sales data. One metric that’s important for us is to see how many customers are returning for their second order. However, I’ve only been able to find “returning customers” and the “customer order number” filter which only checks the customers current number of orders, not whether a particular order was their second order. Does anyone know how to access and track this metric?
Shopify shows only the total order count for a customer and does not provide details about what customers purchased in their second or subsequent orders, nor does it clearly show the order sequence. Because of this, it is difficult to track customer behavior beyond basic repeat order counts.
To get detailed insights such as the exact products purchased in each order and the full order sequence, you will need a third party reporting app like Report Pundit. Report Pundit records customer orders in sequence starting from Order 1, Order 2, and so on, all the way to the latest order. This gives you complete visibility into a customer’s lifetime order history and makes it easy to identify how many customers return for their second or future purchases.
If you’re looking at second-time orders specifically, the simplest method is to filter customers by order count and focus on those with exactly two orders. From there, you can total the revenue from their second purchase only. Shopify’s built-in reports can help at a high level, but for cleaner results it’s often easiest to export customers and orders and do the filtering in a spreadsheet.
