High risk of fraud detected - Digital Products

I am getting a lot of orders for my digital products listed as “High risk of fraud detected”. These are clearly someone testing out stolen credit cards or something like that. How do I block these high risk sales? I just got a $15.00 chargeback on a $1.99 order. I’m refunding these orders as they come in, but I need to block them.

Hi @Johnny724 ,
I hope this message finds you well .Start with Shopify Fraud Filter + stricter payment settings, and if the problem persists, add an app like FraudBlock or NoFraud. That way, high-risk orders are automatically blocked/canceled before they cost you money.
Thanks
Manoj

Thank you. Were do I adjust my payment settings?

@Johnny724 ,
Go to Shopify admin →In left side bar ( Settings )→Payments
Thanks

Manual payment capture isn’t the default, but it really should be. The only downside is that extra click to capture payment on obviously low risk orders, but that can be automated.

You can also use Shopify Flow to automatically capture payments on low risk orders. That way you can save time from manually clicking “Capture Payment” on normal orders, while not being charged for transaction fees or potential chargebacks on fraudulent orders:

Here’s a sample Shopify Flow template you can download.

@Johnny724 Unfortunately, Shopify doesn’t automatically block high-risk orders — it only flags them so you can review. Since you’re selling digital products (with no shipping), fraudsters often target these stores to test stolen cards.

A few steps that can help:

  • Set up automatic payment capture rules: Use Shopify Flow (if on a plan that supports it) or a third-party fraud app to automatically cancel/refund any orders marked as “High risk.”

  • Enable 3D Secure / AVS checks in your payment settings where available. This forces additional verification and reduces card testing attempts.

  • Consider an anti-fraud app with a one-time or flat fee (e.g., FraudBlock, NoFraud) — they can auto-block or cancel high-risk orders before fulfillment.

  • Block repeat offenders by IP, email, or card BIN using your fraud app or a firewall service.

Refunding manually will work in the short term, but automation will save you time and help avoid chargebacks.
