when i up set up a customer they will receive a generic password. they then want to change it to one of their own but there is no option to do so.

When creating customer accounts, you can invite customers to create their accounts. However, if you’ve created the accounts and passwords for your customers, then you can have them reset their passwords through the customer accounts login page of your website. From there, they can receive a password reset via email.
