Bumping. Because this needs more eyes and more people calling Shopify to make this feature request. Not just comments on the forum.
Even with the “upgraded” POS, nothing! Perhaps Shopify should have their programmers work retail for a month or more, so they understand why this is an important feature in a POS. Or they could come up with a customer app were customers could check their balances at shopify stores, think of all the extra data collecting they could do

We’ve developed an app which helps to check gift card balance at a storefront side and in POS.
To be able to check the remaining balance of gift cards in Shopify POS app make the following:
- Install the app
- Open Shopify POS app
- Go to the page where you would like to place our app tile
- Press Add tile button
- Go to the app menu item
- Select Gift Card Hero from the list
- Press Gift card balance check from the Actions menu
- Press Done
Now clicking on the Gift Card Hero tile will take you to a page where you can check the remaining balance of the gift card.

Appreciate that you have developed something we can use but I refuse to pay $179.88 a year for a feature that should(at the very least) be included in the Pos Plus fee. I understand you are in the business of making money and truly hope you prosper.
Hey shopify why don’t you pay this company $14.99 a month out of the $89.00 you charge us for the “Plus” POS.

What would you consider a fair price for the app? We’ll consider to change the price policy for it even if you suggest to make it lifetime free or charge.
I personally would really love to see a free option for those of us getting started with shops - I understand paying but honestly paying half the fee of the basic shopify plan (which is a plan most people getting started stay on for quite a while) doesn’t make sense to me - it would cost a small business starter a fortune in apps to get established. This really is functionality that Shopify should have sorted out by now - I mean, Big Commerce has it so it’s hard to imagine Shopify not having it. So while I completely understand the charge, I’d love to see a beefy free version for those of us getting started - to help us build business (and keep it) by making logical information accessible to customers and save us admin work that shouldn’t be necessary.

Not a chance I’m paying $15 USD a month to simply check gift card balances. This is a feature Shopify needs to offer as part of their $89usd / month plan, or in the pos “pro” app.
Shame on Shopify, please call in the feature request. Less comments here, and more phone calls in please.
Again well said, every time I call into Shopify I mention this and ask if there’s any update. The usual response is they have the information and make a priority if they feel it is something needed. In other words falls into the no mans land and nothing is done about it seeing how I commented back in Feb of 2021. Shopify really needs to step it up.
What I have done to help with this issue is print out the receipt, because it will print the price along with the QR code of the gift card on a separate receipt. I then add it to the small envelope I put the gift card into. You can find small envelopes for places that sell mini cards. I order mine from Nashvillewraps.com. I just had this issue and the customer then noticed that there was a paper in their envelope that told them the amount on the gift card, which saved me from having to log into the admin portal.
Also, I have not been able to test this, but it is possible to scan the gift card when in the orders section of the POS in the search bar. When I tried scanning an unused gift card, it said “gift card not recognized” so maybe it’s possible to search for one that has been purchased that way.
Totally agreed…this feature request started all the way back in 2019 , but now in 2022 it is still not available.
From a customer perspective, being able to check the balance of their giftcard should be the most basic right they should have…yet this is not available for some reason.
I agree that it should be included with Shopify Pro. All the apps we have to install is getting out of control and expensive just to have the basic functions needed to provide for our customers. Every single time I call Shopify, they will respond at the end; Is there anything else we can help you with. I reply that is a loaded question and are you ready, gift card check balance, bulk editor features would like the old format back, (not user friendly), media box should be tied to the variant box when you delete a variant so it will delete the matching image at the same time. Need to streamline our workflow. To this day still nothing and the gift card feature they did add is useless. can’t scan the card for a balance check.
Hey all, i actually found a pretty solid app that can be installed in the
storefront within seconds. It also offers a POS Title and a Dashboard.
The app is called gift-card-hero <>.
But yeah, you’re right. Something that shopify could have done for ages.

That doesn’t work - the order number is not on the gift card.
I 100% agree. I’m so tired of requesting help to simple features that should be included on the POS and even on the backend without being told I will need to install another app. The apps add up, conflicts with other 3rd party apps at times, and can slow down our online store speed. I have been asking for this feature for a long time with no results. Shopify continues to make running a store time consuming by removing features that did work or adding the ridiculous amount of clicks to go through the sale process.
