We just switched our plan to NPO Full yesterday. We have an online shop and POS. The description of this plan has this bullet point:
Accept donations through Shopify Payments if a registered charity in the US/Canada.
The only information on donations I can find in the help pages is to customize the tips section at checkout to wording for donations instead. I’ve made the suggested changes from here.
This requires someone to buy something first and also limits the amount of the donation to the amount of the purchase. Does the above bullet point refer to something else that I’m just not finding?
Yes that’s right, it’s an addition in the checkout.
If you want to collect donations pre-checkout I have 2 solutions:
A) Create a donation product. Then the customer can add it to cart like they do normal products.
B) If you want a donation widget that you can put anywhere on your site, you can use Tip Jar. For example you can put a donation button on the cart page for people to add the donation to cart, or you could put the button on all product pages if you want to have extra visibility, on your home page, etc. With either option you can put a custom block of text to explain what the donation is about, and the customer can checkout with only the donation.
Thank you for your response. Based on its being called out as an NPO feature, I was hoping for something more robust and integrated. We had already implemented a Donation product so we’ll stick to that and the rewording of the tip at checkout.
Yes, I am experiencing the same frustration. The description for the NPO plan very clearly says, Accept donations seamlessly through Shopify Payments. However, once you sign up for the plan, you very quickly learn this is not true.
And there is ZERO support for this. It seems no one on the support team knows how this plan works. The ENTIRE point of it is to keep costs down and accept donations, SEAMLESSLY.
Most NPO’s can’t fork out another $100/mo for a third-party app.
I triple-checked before moving my company over to Shopify from WP. I was told several times we would be able to collect one-time and recurring donations. Yet, here I am, getting the runaround from clueless support and no option to collect donations.
