Goal: add a downloadable button for an ebook and place it as a standard button anywhere on the site.
Latest update: The product page already shows a working download button. The community requested details on how it was implemented to help others.
Suggested approach: Instead of a direct, instant download, route even free items through checkout to collect customers’ email addresses and grow a contact list.
List the ebook as a product.
Use a digital delivery app (e.g., Shopify’s Digital Downloads) to automatically send the ebook after checkout.
Key terms:
Checkout: the process customers complete to place an order, enabling data capture (e.g., email).
Email marketing: sending targeted emails to subscribers to drive engagement and sales.
Resources: A free Marketing 101 course on Shopify Learn is recommended for building an email marketing strategy.
Status: No step-by-step solution for the button implementation was shared yet; the thread remains open. Action items: consider the email capture flow and the Digital Downloads app; share technical steps for the button when available.
Hi, I have uploaded a Digital Download Ebook product on my website, and I want to add a download button to this product and also is it possible to show this as a normal button so that I can add this button where I want on my website, and when people click on download the Ebook gets Downloaded.
I had a look at your product page and I saw you were able to add a download button to it. Would you care to share how you added it so your solution can help the members of our community and fellow merchants too?
While adding a download button is a seamless way for customers to download your ebook, you’re missing out on a benefit that you can take advantage of when customers go through your checkout to retrieve the ebook. When customers place an order for a free item and proceed to your checkout, it doesn’t mean the item is completely free. Through this process, customers can get your ebook in exchange for their contact information, specifically their email address, which you can use to build your customer database. A large customer database is very valuable for email marketing. If you are looking to make sales and grow your business through email marketing, consider listing your ebook as a product (and use an app, such as Digital Downloads, to send the ebook to them) so customers can add it to their cart and they can leave their email addresses with you.
If you haven’t looked into email marketing, I recommend going through this free Marketing 101 course on our Shopify Learn page.
