Where are you hosting your free content?
If you don’t have a lot of free content, you can simply upload the files to Shopify and grab the direct file links, and list them on a page.
If you have a lot of free content for download, then you can consider using an app like File Search & Library MP, which lets you embed a library like widget into your page. You can display your free downloadables into different categories, while also providing a search function for customers to search for files they want.
With either these ways, your customers can click and direct download, without going through a check out process.
