How can I add a required VAT number field in the checkout form?

Hey guys,
Due to the new regulations for online sales, it seems that I’m requires to collect the VAT number for every client.
Portuguese clients are already aware of this and many of them write me an email with their VAT number so I can send them a correct invoice, but I cannot email every client asking for their VAT number.

From what I was able to understand so far, there is no way to customize checkout, or is it? I need to add a blank form for VAT number and it must be required.

Any ideas on how to solve this?

Checkout customizations are available for Shopify Plus merchants only. If you are open to customizing the cart page instead, you can follow these steps:

In your order details page, the information will be captured under additional notes (screenshot below).

Hi AnaSeixas, this would be a fast and possible way to simple way to solve this.

What about adding a field when you register for the VAT, and for already registered costumers send a mass email to update acc with the Vat.

Again not the most effective way to work this out.

I also need this form for my travelling shopify store. Its always very critical important part of the store that we should provide the checkout form.
