hello, i want to add an “age” option for my products as a “dropdown bar” but when i write the different ages ( i write one and i click on comma and its tells me this :
You can only add 1 variant at a time. Remove commas and try again.)
please help
The easiest way is to delete your variant section and starting over, Once the variant section is added, it gets tedious as you need to go in

My name is Lilith, I’m on the Social Care team at Shopify.
There are a couple of ways to do this. One is through the admin creating bulk duplicates with the new options or through editing a product CSV. Both of these will help eliminate the need to add an option and filling in each field over and over again. However, depending on your skill level it could be quick or it could take a little time.
Solution 1: Duplicating Variants
For this one, you’ll want to follow the steps outlined in our help center guide to creating multiple option values.
The summary of the steps are:
1. Create a new option & the default value for all variants (Don’t forget to save after adding it).
2. Select the variants to add another option value to
3. Open the More actions menu.
4. Duplicate the variants in “…in another age” for example
5. Type in the new age and check off all the boxes to duplicate all the details
6. Click on Duplicate.
7. Do it again for the new age group.
Solution 2: Product CSV
With CSV’s you’ll want to export your products in a CSV. You can use the help center guide on how to export products to do this.
When you open the file you can edit the columns for Option 3. The name is “Age” in your case and you can add values in the column next to it.
I’ve gone ahead and highlighted the columns here for you to see:
Be sure to fill in the rest of the columns like the other variants, some columns cannot be empty.
As an example, you can see the edits I made to my product CSV below. Remember to consider the variant combinations. This is why I added duplicate variants for Size in the sheets below. Each Size variant has the new 3rd option available so we need to make sure they have a row to indicate that. I’ve chosen in my example to only allow Chocolate Chip to come in the 3rd option.
Once you have the edits you want and saved the CSV you can import the file back into the admin. Just be sure to replace the existing product in your store so that you don’t end up with a duplicate product or error.
Tips
Creating additional options is great for products, however, we want to make sure that as entrepreneurs we keep the options in a closed limited space for customers. It’s human nature to struggle with decisions, so giving the customer more options than they can handle could risk a decrease in conversion rates.
I realize that you’re adding the “Age” option. Would this be to create a custom product or is your product available in different variants for different ages?
