How can I add import tax to final price in Shopify?

Hello there,

We sell from the UK to mainland Europe. We pay the import tax ourselves, however we want to simply charge their shipping import tax to the final price before the customer pays. For example the import tax fee in Germany is 21% off the final sale value and in The Netherlands its about 9%. How can I get this added as a rule within Shopify?

Step 1: Use Shopify Markets (Recommended)

Shopify Markets lets you set country-specific pricing and handle taxes including import duties.

  1. Go to Shopify Admin → Settings → Markets.
  2. Add Europe or individual countries like Germany, Netherlands, etc.
  3. Enable custom pricing for each market.
  4. Adjust prices for each country to include the import tax.

    • Example:

      • Germany: Final price = Product price + 21% import tax

      • Netherlands: Final price = Product price + 9% import tax

  5. Shopify will display these country-specific prices to your customers.

Step 2: Use Shopify Tax Overrides

You can create tax overrides per country:

  1. Go to Settings → Taxes and Duties.

  2. Create a manual tax override for the country.

  • Germany → 21%
  • Netherlands → 9%
  1. Shopify will add this tax at checkout.
