How can I adjust product price at checkout?

Topic summary

Former QuickBooks POS users migrated to Shopify are frustrated by the inability to adjust product prices at checkout—a basic feature available in most POS systems.

Core Issue:

  • Users cannot modify item prices during transactions (e.g., charging 1.5x for double-sided prints vs. single-sided)
  • Current workarounds include creating custom sales items or applying manual discounts
  • These workarounds break inventory tracking, distort sales analytics, and eliminate COGS (Cost of Goods Sold) tracking

User Impact:

  • Particularly problematic for businesses with variable pricing (wholesale customers, custom arrangements, fluid pricing models)
  • Creates inefficiency requiring manual calculations and increases error risk
  • Multiple users report lost sales due to this limitation

Shopify’s Response:

  • Support representatives acknowledge feedback and claim it’s shared with developers
  • No timeline provided for implementation despite requests spanning 8+ years
  • Users directed to third-party app “POS Variable Priced Products” (additional cost)

Current Status:

  • Discussion remains unresolved after nearly a year
  • Several users switching to alternative POS systems (Rain POS mentioned favorably)
  • Class action lawsuit mentioned against Intuit for migration issues
  • Growing frustration over missing “basic” retail functionality during critical Q4 period

With our old POS system, we could easily change the price of an item at checkout. For example, someone orders a double-sided print from us; that’s 1.5 times the price of a single sided print. We no longer seem to be able to do this at all, which is messing up our inventory because we have to sell these things as custom items now instead. Has anyone found a way to adjust the price of a product during the checkout process?

We also need this functionality. Adding as a custom sale causes unnecessary inventory adjustments. PLEASE Shopify, correct this issue.

I’m so frustrated. After all the time they spent telling us it would be “just the same” there are these significant, non-minor issues that just don’t work. Sorry you are in the same boat!!

We are also creating custom sales when we need to do this. Just another item on my “Bitch List.”

Hi @Amy_Dryden

Thank you for your feedback on this topic. At this time creating a custom item will be the best option for this. Alternatively, you can create a product listing that is hidden from any sales channels except the POS, so that you can have more accurate inventory adjustments for this product.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to our dedicated support team by phone to get the most up to date information on resolving any migration issues you are experiencing:

Wow - all I can do is laugh at that statement (otherwise I won’t be able to stop crying). All last week I tried to get help from the support team via the virtual assistant and phone calls - no answer from either one.

Hey @SteelHead

Can you share more information about what happens when you try calling the number I shared above?

You should also be able to connect with our standard chat support through our Help Center at any time as well. If you are not able to connect to our chat support team, please share a screenshot with me of what you are seeing when you try.

In my experience calling the number, either I am on hold for an extended time and then the line disconnects, or when I do talk to someone they don’t seem to understand what I am even asking. Exceptionally frustrating.

This is not a “best option”. The inability to adjust prices at checkout is a major, basic feature we all need. Creating custom items makes the Shopify analytics on item sales meaningless.

Hi @Amy_Dryden

Thank you for your feedback on this. I will share that with our developers as well for further consideration. It isn’t a feature that Shopify currently offers, but I definitely recognize the value of it. Hopefully it is something we can provide in the near future.

It’s really bad when you can do custom pricing on every other POS except Shopify. Please have them fix this ASAP.

How can I attribute Custom Sales to COGS? Not really inventory but def COGS.

Hi @Knit3

If you are trying to alter the price on an existing item in your inventory then I can suggest using a manual discount to reduce the product price or adding a custom sale item to the order alongside the existing product to increase the cart total/product price.

This will allow you to still track the cost of goods on this item while ensuring you are charging the customer the correct amount.

Create a one off quick sale item or draft sale item will not allow for COG tracking. So you would need to create a new product in the store admin to accurately track COG for it.

Ya, that does work. But I shouldn’t have to put in a discount or custom
item for half of the customers. Let me explain. We have been a customer of
Quickbooks for MANY years. Now that we had to make the switch to Shopify,
there are so many options that we are used to having and working with, that
Shopify has not even thought of. We sell a lot wholesale to many local
businesses. We are a brick-and-mortar shop. So prices change all the time
based on what the business is buying from us. So we are always pulling out
the calculator to figure out discounts which is not a time saving and this
is where mistakes are going to happen.

Absolutely, and I can fully recognize that. The feedback we receive from merchants such as yourself will help us in adding features like this as our retail POS system continues to grow.

Is shopify going to be adding features to the POS and if so what is the timeline for this? Its not usable in its current state for most QB POS customers and to get it close requires several expensive apps

Oh this is just ANOTHER stupid feature that Shopify thinks WE DON’T NEED!!! What STORE can’t override and change a price at check-out??? Oh I am SOOOOO angry that we were encouraged to choose Shopify by QB - - what a total and complete SCAM. Beware beware beware.

No….THIS IS NOT HELPFUL!!! What on earth makes you think it is? Have you EVER worked a retail store??? What a joke. What a joke. What a joke. I OWN this store and I can’t OVERRIDE a price at checkout? Really? Seriously? I’m joining the Class Action Law Suit as quickly as possible and I encourage ALL OTHERS in my position to do the same. This is a nightmare.

Where is there information on a class action lawsuit?

Yes, Shopify will continue to add features and expand our POS capabilities. All of Shopify’s services are constantly growing and adapting to our merchant needs. I don’t have a timeline I can offer for new features. You can see new updates as they roll out via the Shopify Changelog here: Shopify Changelog.
