How can I alter the email address for receiving payment information?

Topic summary

A user needs to change the email address receiving Shopify billing notifications from a personal email to a company email.

The initial suggestion was to update the email in Settings > Store details > Store email, but this didn’t resolve the issue—billing emails continued going to a different address. Support recommended contacting Shopify’s higher-tier support for account-specific investigation.

Multiple users report the same problem:

  • Billing receipts going to former employees or incorrect addresses
  • Unable to locate the setting to change this
  • Frustration with unhelpful support responses

Potential explanation identified: Under Shopify’s role-based access control model, all users with “Organization administrator” roles automatically receive billing emails, and this cannot be edited. Previously this may have been customizable, but recent migrations to the new access control system removed this option. To control permissions, custom roles must be created with specific permissions selected, though Organization administrator and Store owner role permissions cannot be modified.

Status: The issue remains unresolved for the original poster and others experiencing similar problems.

Hello,

How do I change the e-mail address that shopify billing (billing@shopify.com) sends payment information for the website to? My personal e-mail is somehow set up in the settings, and I need to change this to the company e-mail.

Kind regards,

Lassse

Hey, @ljonker1 !

All emails that Shopify sends out regarding your account will be sent to the email address listed in your Settings > Store details > Store email as shown below:

Click Edit in the top right-hand corner, enter your new email address and be sure to scroll down and hit save! Let me know if you have any trouble with that.

Hi Maz,

The location you suggested contains a different e-mail address than the e-mail address that shopify billing sends its e-mails to. Is there another location in which I can change the e-mail address for shopify billing?

Hey, @ljonker1 !

Thanks for responding and letting me know!

That is indeed strange as the email address listed in the store details settings should be the one that the billing info goes to. Did you ever update the email in the settings in the past?

As I do not have access to your account from here, I would suggest reaching out to our higher tier support here at this link. They will be able to look at some logs for you and understand better what might be happening here!

I have this same issue. My monthly account billing receipt goes to a employee who is no longer with the company. I can’t seem to find where to edit that. I’ve been through > settings, > finance, > notifications, etc.

Did you find out why? I’m having the same issue where the billing info goes to a users e-mail and not the specified billing e-mail.

I’m having the same issue as well. When I attempt to reach out to Shopify support they literally have no clue what I’m talking about. It’s infuriating that Shopify support is as bad as it is.

@Optix removing that employee from users doesn’t help?
I was looking into that issue myself. What I’ve managed to find out is that all users with an “Organisation administrator” role are receiving billing emails and you can’t edit that. I think before it was possible, but as of recently stores were migrated to role-based access control model.
You can’t edit permissions of organization administrator and store owner roles.
If you want to manage permissions for a specific person, you need to create a role. And in that role you can select which permission will be allowed.
