How can I apply tax to certain items only in my online store?

is there a way to add tax on some items but not all? i am obtaining my tax exemption certificate but there are items i have purchased, with tax, that i will need to collect from my buyers and pay back to the IRS. once i have my tax exemption certificate, i will be purchasing items tax free and not charging my buyers the tax.

Hi, @eb98 . I’m happy to help you out with this!

You can definitely decide which products to charge tax on and which ones to not charge tax on. This can be managed on your product pages by going to Products in your Shopify admin and selecting the product you want to edit. From here, you’ll find the Charge tax on this product setting under the product’s Pricing area. You can see an example of this setting below. If you’re doing this for multiple products you can also manage this setting in your product bulk editor by adding the Charges taxes field when you open your bulk editor. If you have a group of products that all need the same tax override, you can also manage this by applying a tax override to an entire collection. This guide on tax overrides and exemptions can help you out with this.

Hi Eb98,

The solution offered by Shopify is a bit flawed. If you employ that solution and you sell also abroad where you collect taxes , then the sales will be tax free also for these countries. What you can do is that you can freeze price for non-taxable products for you home market, add them to a separate collection and apply 0 override. Product should be left taxable in the your inventory section. That way your goods will still be taxable in other markets.
