Hey,
We are looking to run a promo where customers receive a free gift on orders over £40 from a specific collection. I am aware of the option to create the discount within ‘discounts’ but that requires the customer to add the product manually to their basket. Is there a auto option at all or is the only way to achieve this via 3rd party apps?

The EasyGift app (https://apps.shopify.com/gifter-cart-auto-include) lets you automatically add gifts to your customer’s cart when a trigger is met (cart value, product quantity or mixture). In your case, you’d want to set up a product rule to automatically add the gifted product when an item from a collection is added to the cart.
You can also set up rules to offer your customer different products in an offer to customer type rule, where a popup will show the products you’ve selected will be offered to the customer once the trigger of the rule has been met.

Since Shopify’s native discounts don’t support automatically adding gifts to the cart, the easiest way to achieve this is by using a third-party app. It makes the setup much simpler.
One option you can try is the BOGOS: Free Gift Bundle Upsell.

As you mentioned, Shopify’s native ‘discounts’ have a limitation where the customers have to add the gift product to their basket manually to avail the offer. There is no option to add the gift automatically using only Shopify.
