We have a light store that should not have speed/loading issues but it shows a paltry 25 speed score. It’s obvious that necessary apps may be causing a slowdown in speed but it seems to be Shopify provides very small storage for stores on basic plan, while a store often requires multiple apps to work properly.
There’s nothing more we can do with images and the site itself to increase speed since photos etc are small in size and the site itself is coded to load fast. We have Jumbo installed for optimizer.
Any other ideas how to improve the speed or reduce load caused by apps? None of the apps show how large their size is or whether they cause slowdown on page load.

Anyway you are right, if the theme is coded well and images are optimized, usually the bad score depends on the app you have installed.
The trick that works and usually can improve the speed, is to delay as much possible the loading of extra non-critical resources.
@shopfy-2020 25 is not a bad score if you’re going by Lighthouse / Shopify speed score. Most stores that are doing actual business we see scoring between 20 and 35 (we analyze and optimize sites every day). Lighthouse (the engine used) is not geared for sites like this that use public themes and 3rd party apps. It doesn’t mean your site is slow, it just doesn’t fit to the predetermined scoring of that particular tool.
