Topic summary
Users are seeking to cancel Shopify subscriptions and obtain refunds for charges they didn’t expect or want. Common scenarios include being billed while stores are inactive, not realizing automatic payments were enabled, or abandoning setup attempts during trial periods.
Shopify’s Official Response:
- Refunds violate Terms of Service, though support may review cases individually
- Users can cancel by navigating to Settings > Plan > Deactivate Store
- Alternative: “Pause and Build” plan ($9 USD/month) instead of full cancellation
For Annual Subscriptions:
Pausing provides prorated credit for remaining subscription time, which automatically applies to future monthly charges until depleted.
Ongoing Issues:
- Multiple users report continued charges after deactivation attempts
- One user claims charges persisted nearly 2 years post-deactivation, causing bank overdraft fees
- Frustration expressed over difficulty reaching live support
Support Access:
Users unable to resolve issues through standard cancellation steps are directed to contact Shopify Support via the Help Center or a specific contact form, as forum staff cannot authenticate accounts or process refunds directly.
Several requests remain unresolved with users awaiting confirmation of cancellation and refund status.
Hi, @Dripelite . Do you mind if I ask why you’d like to close your store? If you have any questions about the platform I’d be happy to help!
If you’d still like to close your store, you can cancel your subscription and close your store by following these steps. If you are considering working on your store again in the near future I’d recommend pausing your store instead of closing it. This will allow you to continue working on your store at a reduced cost of $9 USD/month instead of your full subscription cost. You can learn more about pausing your store and the requirements to do so here if you’re interested.
Refunds are against our Terms of Service. We have more information on this explained here. That being said, you can speak with our support team through this page and we can review this with you in more detail. When you visit the page I shared to contact support you’ll first need to tell the Help Center assistant your question or problem and it will direct you to the resources or team you need for further help.
Please let me know if you have any questions!
Hi Erin,
Thanks for your reply, i want to know if i pause my store as you recommend
and not close my store then whats going to happen with my yearly
subscription ($515) which is already deducted by shopify how can get that
back and change it to $9 pause and build plan.
Hi, @Dripelite .
When you pause your store, your shop will be paused immediately with prorated credit for the remaining time of your annual subscription. The credit will be issued automatically and future subscription charges will be automatically paid until the credit has been fully used. When you’re ready to re-activate your account, a new annual cycle will begin the day the account is reactivated. Any remaining credits would be used towards the charge to start your new annual cycle. If you’re still interested in pausing your store you can do this by going to Settings > Plan > Deactivate Store > Pause and Build in your Shopify admin. The steps are also explained on this page.
Happy to help if you have more questions!
I just Deactivated My store. just want to make sure this means that I will no longer be getting charged for anything.
Hi, @Hunter2222 .
If you’ve followed these steps to cancel your subscription and deactivate your store, Shopify will no longer charge you for that store. That being said, if you’ve set up anything for your store that charges you outside of Shopify you’ll want to ensure you close those accounts as well to prevent any unwanted charges.
Let me know if you have more questions!
How did u deactivate your store? I have the same problem
Hi, @Tamarjsksk .
Are you having trouble closing your store using the steps I shared earlier in this thread? If so, please let me know more about what’s happening when you try to close your store by following the steps in this guide. I’d be happy to look into it with you!
Steps to close store:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Plan.
- Click Deactivate store.
- If applicable, then review the options to switch to the Pause and build plan, or start a new store.
- If you still want to deactivate, then click Deactivate store.
- Select a reason for the deactivation, and then click Continue.
- Enter your password, and then click Deactivate now.
If you have any other questions about your store we can help with before you deactivate, I’m happy to help with that as well!
How do you get in touch with support? I deactivated my account before I even got started adding product because I couldn’t figure any of it out and that was almost 2 years ago and I have continued to try to get help with the charges Shopify keeps taking from my bank account. I just noticed another charge this morning! Trying to maneuver this site for someone not techy is like being in a hamster wheel. I thought my repeated request a couple of times to Stop payment had worked but it hasn’t.
I have been keeping proof of charges and screenshot of when I deactivated my acct and when I’ve tried to connect with support to stop charges and refund my bank account. This is so frustrating and I feel like when a company doesn’t give you proper phone access to contact support it’s just shady. Just out of integrity Shopify!!

Hi there. I took that 3 day trail option as a friend encouraged me with this software, that was going to build and stock me a Shopify store.
Now managed to get around 80% done, but couldn’t manage to get it built perfectly, so after 9 to 10 hours straight trying to get it up and running. I was left feeling like the proverbial fish out of water. Frustrated at some point I noticed a “cancel my subscription” which I then opted for and thought that was that.
Part of my reasoning and willingness to give this a try, is that l have been struggling securing gainful employment, despite having a MBA.
Then saw, you tried running a debit on my account, with the promise to resubmit order for payment again on the 30th. Now my bank charges me a R80 penalty for everh unsuccessful debit order run.
So you’ve run my account into the red, with the added threat of doing that again. This after I’ve definately, did click on a cancel option.
If your going to insist in doing so, kindly allow me to inform u, when I do have funds in that account for u to then submit ur order successfully. Would appreciate avoiding, adding insult to injury in having additional penalties added as well as negative reflection on my credit rating.
Regards and take care
