How can I convert an abandoned checkout into a sale in Debut theme?

I have a Debut theme. Is there any way that I can hange an abandoned checkout to a sale/recover if the client made a direct payment to me? Instead of me creating another order I want ton just change the abandoned checkout to recovered.

Hi @kioo

As far as I know, Shopify does not allow merchants to turn an abandoned checkout into an order from the admin side. So In your case, you can create a Draft Order for your customers.

Draft Orders allow you to create an order for your customer and accept payment for it, all from your admin.
You can process payment by entering your customer’s credit card info or mark the order as “paid” if payment is received outside of Shopify.

If you feel like my answer is helpful, please mark it as a SOLUTION. Let me know if you have any questions!

Hi, @kioo .

Thanks for writing into the community! What kind of online business do you have?

You’re currently using Debut theme and you’ve mentioned that you’re looking for a way to change the abandoned cart into a sale or recover it. You mentioned that your client has already made payment to you and instead of creating another order you’d want to recover the cart.

At this time, turning an abandoned cart into an order is not a native feature of the admin. However, I do have some additional workarounds for you to help customers recover their abandoned checkout.

Recovering abandoned checkouts:

  • Manually email a customer a link to their abandoned checkout so that they can complete their checkout if they wish to do so.
  • The cart recovery link can be copy and pasted into any email if you want to send a completely customized email.
  • This can be done directly within your Shopify admin, Orders > Abandoned checkout section.

Automatically email a customer a link to their abandoned checkout:

  • This can be enabled within your Shopify admin, Settings > Checkout section.
  • In the Abandoned checkouts section, check Automatically send abandoned checkout emails.
  • Under Send to, choose who you want to send a checkout recovery email to:
    • Anyone who abandons a checkout
    • Email subscribers who abandon a checkout
  • Under Send after, select the number of hours that Shopify should wait before sending the abandoned checkout email:
    • Never. You can still manually send an email to customers.
    • 1 hour later
    • 6 hours later
    • 10 hours later (default)
    • 24 hours later
  • Click Save.

I’ll share a screenshot below of where to locate ‘send a cart recovery email’ within Orders > Abandoned checkout.

A third option is to use an app like Rivo Abandoned Cart Recovery that allows you to send checkout emails, SMS and push notifications. Using this feature can help with conversion rates and help them complete their checkout if they wish. You’re also able to customize the message within the cart recovery email to fit your brand.

If your customer has already made a direct payment to you, the next best step is to create a draft order. You can follow the steps within this resource on Creating draft orders. You’ll need to add: products to the order, customer, add tags and notes. Lastly, you can either send an invoice to the customer that will contain a checkout link so the customer can make payment. On the other hand you can accept payment directly from the customer and save the order as draft and update it afterwards.

Shopify doesn’t let you mark abandoned checkouts as “recovered” or convert them into orders once the customer didn’t complete payment online.

However, there is a solution that works exactly how you want:

With the Abandoned checkouts to draft app you can:

• Mark an abandoned checkout as “Recovered” for bookkeeping so it doesn’t count as lost revenue and shows correctly in your reports
• Convert an abandoned checkout into a draft order instantly no need to re-enter products or customer details manually

This means if a customer has paid you directly (e.g., bank transfer, UPI, cash, etc.), you can reflect that in your Shopify dashboard without creating a brand new order from scratch.

The app works with your existing abandoned checkout records and gives you the flexibility you need for accounting and order management.

Best part is the app is free now, so there’s no downside to trying it.
