Hi @born2bfree67 ,
Thanks for reaching out! I’d love to help.
Metafields are actually used to display specialized information on your online store in a variety of ways. To collect personalization information such as engraving, you would need to alter the product template slightly. There is a step-by-step guide available on this link.
Please note that this is an advanced tutorial and is not supported by Shopify. Knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Liquid is required. Consider hiring a Shopify Expert if you aren’t comfortable doing the steps in the tutorial.
Otherwise, you can look into some of our app options. Infinite Product Options has a free plan and allows you to add customization such as a text field and image or swatch selector.
Product Personalizer is a little more unique and allows you to add your own custom fonts so your customer can preview the text they want to be engraved. The basic plan is only 9.99. Check it out here.
Let me know what you think.
thank you however, all the videos and instructions here on the community board display fields that are shopify 2.0 and not the 5.0, so the screens are different when editing codes. theres a mixtures of .json and .liquid in both the templates and sections. too many errors given and i’m leaving shopify. this is the second time i’ve attempted and i just can’t waste time anymore. thank you for your help.
Hi again @born2bfree67 ,
I’m sorry to hear about the trouble while trying to edit the code. Just to confirm - which theme are you using and what version?
To clarify, Online Store 2.0 gives merchants a theme editor with complete control over building new page templates and storefronts and quickly adding apps to specific parts of their store. And the majority of the Shopify themes are compatible with Online Store 2.0. However, each theme gets regular updates, and no matter which version you have, they are usually quite consistent with the tutorials. You can learn more about Online Store 2.0 concept here.
If you’re using 2.0 themes, you can check this fantastic third-party tutorial on adding the engraving field to the product page. It does mention the Dawn theme, however, this theme is pretty much the base of all 2.0 themes, so you should be able to apply the same changes.
Let me know if that helps!
