How can I create sub categories in my online store without a drop down menu?

Topic summary

A new Shopify store owner wants to organize products using sub-categories without dropdown menus. Currently, clicking “Shop Online” displays all collections (Holidays & Events, Hobbies, etc.), but they want an intermediate landing page—for example, clicking “Holidays & Events” should show options like Easter, Christmas, and Weddings before reaching products.

Proposed Solutions:

  • One user suggests creating collections and assigning them as “child collections” via the Collections section, though this feature’s availability is questioned by another participant who cannot locate the “Add child collection” option.
  • A Shopify representative clarifies that nested menu items create dropdown menus in navigation, which contradicts the original poster’s preference.
  • A third-party app (FDL Breadcrumbs & Collections) is recommended for visual drag-and-drop creation of breadcrumbs and sub-collections without coding.

Status: The discussion remains open with no confirmed solution for creating non-dropdown sub-category landing pages using native Shopify features alone.

Hoping for some help - I am just setting up my first Shopify store. I need help with sub categories, but I do NOT want it as a drop down menu if possible. Right now when you click Shop Online it takes you to a page of all my collections. (ie Holidays & Events, Hobbies, etc) I want sub categories in each of those collections - so when you click Holidays & Events you go to a page with options for Easter, Christmas, Weddings, etc. I hope this makes sense.

I tried to attach pictures but the forum isn’t letting me

You can modify the menu from the navigation option, just create category menu and assign the category.

To create a sub-collection, you can create a new collection and then assign it as a child of an existing collection. To do this, go to the “Collections” section of your Shopify admin and click on the collection that you want to add a sub-collection to. Then click on “Add child collection” and enter the details for the sub-collection.

Hi there,

I am also trying to create a child collection with a drop down menu. I can’t see ‘Add child collection’ within my collections. Has this feature been removed?

Thanks!

Hey @jenny231188 ,

You can build drop-down menus by creating or moving menu items so that they’re “nested” below a top-level item. The top-level item appears in the main menu on your online store, and the nested menu items appear in a drop-down menu as shown here. Is this what you were after?

Hi @Melissa716

If you’re still looking for a breadcrumb solution — especially one that works well with nested or custom collections — you might want to try our app FDL Breadcrumbs & Collections.

It lets you create breadcrumbs and sub-collections visually with drag-and-drop, no code needed. Works well for large catalogs too.

Hope this helps!
