How can I deactivate my store without paying yearly subscription?

Topic summary

A store owner wants to deactivate a store but is blocked by a requirement to pay all outstanding invoices. They’re on an annual plan and are trying to avoid being charged for another year, creating a loop where deactivation requires payment of the new annual invoice.

A Shopify staff member states that all current outstanding invoices must be paid before closure and links to official closure instructions and live support for billing-specific help.

The owner says the Help Center chatbot isn’t helpful and billing only presents payment for the next year’s subscription. They’re willing to pay reasonable closing costs but not another annual fee, and fear their only option is to let the payment default.

Status: Unresolved. Action suggested is to reach live support via the Help Center prompts to access a live chat agent to review billing and closure options; no concrete resolution in-thread.

I want to deactivate one of my stores. When I try to do that I get a red flag that all invoices must be paid before I can but the reason I’m deactivating is that I don’t want to pay for another yearly subscription. There are no other options so I just keep going around this loop. How can I move this on? Thanks.

Hi there, @mappyd .

In order to close a store, you have to pay all current outstanding invoices. You can read our full instructions and considerations for store closure here.

If you have any questions around your billing, it is best to get in touch with live support about this as this is the only secure way we can access your account. Our live support can be reached here. Please follow the prompts given by the virtual Help Center assistant in order to access our live chat support. Thanks so much!

Thanks but that didn’t resolve the issue. The help centre chatbot just doesn’t understand, and when I go to billing I’m asked to pay for next year’s subscription, which is exactly why I want to deactivate the store. I’m happy to pay any reasonable costs but that dosen’t seem possible. The only option I can see is to let the payment default.
